Under Australia’s spam rules, businesses must make it easy for you to opt out of marketing communications.

They can’t:

• Require you to provide personal information
• Ask you to create or log into an account
• Send marketing messages without your consent

The ACMA monitors compliance and can take strong action against businesses that break the rules.

If you think a business has breached these rules, you can make a complaint here: https://www.acma.gov.au/spam-complaint-form

Australia’s corporate law reform alliance calls for action to support economic growth and productivity through law reform body

A group of professional associations, business groups and academics has joined forces as the Corporate Law Reform Alliance (Alliance) to raise awareness of how the nation’s complex and unclear corporation law framework is holding Australia’s economy back.

In 2023, the Australian Law Reform Commission described the Corporations Act 2001 which includes financial services law, as no longer fit for purpose, shrouded in complexity, unclear and extremely difficult to navigate and administer.

“Complex and ill-defined regulation not only impacts how organisations are governed. It also makes it more difficult for regulators to administer and courts to enforce. It makes it harder for individuals to understand and enforce their rights.” Pauline Vamos, spokesperson for the Alliance stated....

New figures from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) reveal that more telco customers are turning to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) to resolve complaints with their service providers.

The 2024–25 telco complaints report shows that the proportion of complaints escalated to the TIO rose to 6.6 per cent, up from 6.1 per cent in 2023–24.

ACMA member Samantha Yorke said the industry has been letting the Ombudsman do too much of the heavy lifting on matters that ultimately should be fixed by the telco.....

Social media and big tech under fire as online ethics scores fall into negatives

Governance Institute of Australia’s 2025 Ethics Index reveals a sharp warning sign for the digital world, highlighting Australians’ growing mistrust in the authenticity of social media and online platforms.

While many sectors of society have remained steady or even improved their ethics scores, social media stands out as one of the most negatively viewed areas.

TikTok is overall seen as the least ethical platform, with Facebook and Twitter also viewed negatively.

Between one in four and one in five Australians now rate social media platforms as “very unethical,” placing them among the most distrusted parts of modern life....
