"His words, his courage were with me every day of the campaign. Henry was instrumental in getting me to this place."

Labor MP Ali France delivered an emotional first speech, where she paid tribute to her late teenage son as being "instrumental" to her success in defeating then-Liberal leader Peter Dutton.

Among those wiping away tears on the floor of parliament on Tuesday night were Opposition Leader Sussan Ley and Treasurer Jim Chalmers, as well as Ms France herself as she reflected on some of her final moments with her 19-year-old son Henry, who passed away from leukaemia in February 2024.

WARNING: This story contains some confronting details.

A British surgeon in Gaza has claimed patients who have been shot while seeking food at aid distribution sites are showing a pattern of injuries.

Dr Nick Maynard told ABC Radio National Breakfast there has been an increase in children as young as 11 presenting with gunshot wounds.

"There are a cluster of different body parts shot at on a particular day," he said.

"The numbers we've seen in this pattern are far too great to be coincidental, in my view."

The gastrointestinal surgeon working at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis added that multiple colleagues had shared similar testimony with him.

The IDF has refuted the claim, saying it is baseless and that soldiers are prohibited from intentionally firing at minors.

The US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation took over the distribution of aid in Gaza in May.

GHF and Israeli authorities have claimed death tolls reported by Palestinian authorities are part of Hamas propaganda efforts.

The United Nations estimates that more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since May while trying to get food, most of them near aid sites run by GHF.

Since Donald Trump started his second term as US President, his administration has made several controversial decisions around vaccine policy.

Under the leadership of Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, all 17 members of the country's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices were recently dismissed and replaced with eight new members, some of whom are known for their anti-vaccine views.

President Trump has also banned federal funding being used to support schools with vaccine mandates and ended funding for global vaccine programs in poorer nations.

Last week, major medical organisations filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Health and Human Services and Mr Kennedy over what they describe as "unlawful unilateral vaccine changes".

American College of Physicians President Dr Jason Goldman told The Radio National Hour that the Trump administration is "making distrust" in "evidence-based" vaccines without due process or evidence.

"If we continue to ignore the science and undermine well-established science and safety and the efficacy of vaccines, we are going to see an upsurge of even more vaccine-preventable diseases, which puts the health of our country and the world at risk," he said.
