Bluebottle Kiss played a storming, revelatory set last night in Sydney, following their shows in Newcastle and Canberra the previous nights.
Celebrating the reissue of their 2002 album Revenge Is Slow, on vinyl for the first time (Love As Fiction Records) the band showed why they are one of this country’s leading exponents of music that combines nuance and bombast, drawing on noise pop, underground rock, and psychedelia. They conjure up a bruised and beautiful noise where melody holds firm amid deconstructed rock, knotty arrangements, and a kind of literary romanticism in Hutchings’ lyrics.
This is the classic lineup of the band, where Ben Fletcher’s shift to guitar opened up infinite new avenues of counter playing and dynamic interplay with Hutchings. Last night, bassist Ben Grounds was the sonic anchor, deeply rooted in the lower frequencies, head rocked back, eyes closed, swaying on the band’s oceanic churn. Richard Coneliano is the engine, precise and in-the-pocket, and possessing a power that was at times reminiscent of Rob Hirst.
The band’s encore included songs from across their catalogue – So Slow (Come Across), Generic Teen (Somnambulistic Homesick Blues), Claim (Fear Of Girls), a majestic Homeless Blueless (Patient) and, stretching right back to their first album, Requiem For The Holden (Higher Up The Firetrails).
A packed room, a band in a celebratory mood, fully engaged and immersed in the music, without an ounce of going through the motions of past glories, BBK carried the audience with them through 80 minutes of elegant distortion and artful songwriting, built on heart and craft.
Next up it’s Melbourne this Friday at Northcote Social Club, Ed Castle in Adelaide on Saturday, MO’s Desert Clubhouse in Burleigh Heads on Friday May 29, and Black Bear Lodge on Saturday May 30. This may be the last time for quite a while that the band play live, so don’t miss out on this chance!
