Saffron Kingdom
Directed by Arfat Sheikh
Country of Origin: United States
Runtime: 01:22:00

Synopsis: nspired by actual events, Saffron Kingdom delves into the Kashmir conflict through the lens of a family's journey from Srinagar in the 1990s to Atlanta in 2019. The narrative starts with young Masrat, who witnesses the violence of insurgency during her childhood. By 2014, as an adult, Masrat faces a devastating turn when her husband is abducted, forcing her to flee to America with her young son, Rizwan.

In Atlanta, Rizwan grapples with the trauma of his father's disappearance, while Masrat balances her roles as a protective mother and a university researcher documenting their past. The political upheaval in 2019, including the revocation of Kashmir's semi-autonomous status and a military siege, severs their remaining ties to family in Kashmir, deepening their sense of loss. Both Masrat and Rizwan wrestle with intergenerational trauma as the scars of their homeland's conflict reverberate through their lives.

Amidst these challenges, Masrat strives to reclaim her family's narrative and find their place in a new world, highlighting the enduring struggle for identity and justice amidst personal and political turmoil.

Al Awda
Directed by Jason Soo
Country of Origin: Singapore
Runtime: 01:10:01

Synopsis: This is a film about activism, about the ethics, risks, and realities of putting solidarity into action.

Al Awda follows 22 activists aboard a fishing boat attempting to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Their mission is shaped by a past tragedy. In 2010, Israeli commandos stormed the Mavi Marmara ship that was heading towards Gaza. Ten activists were killed and over 50 wounded.

As they cross the Mediterranean, the activists conduct rehearsals and discussions. The heart of the film lies not in the confrontation with the Israeli navy, but in the collective process: consensus decision-making, mutual care, and a determination to resist injustice through non-violence. Our world is in need of collective liberation. By showing how ordinary people can come together and put solidarity into practice, the film invites the audience to take action. Act now.

IMFF 2025 OFFICIAL SELECTION

THE SHAMAN AND DROPOUT PSYCHOLOGIST
Directed by Frances Ulman
Country of Origin: Mongolia, United States
Runtime: 01:32:56

Synopsis: Filmed in Mongolia, this documentary is an intimate portrait of an elder female shaman named Altantsetseg. We have rare, complete access to be with Altantsetseg as she prepares for, and goes into a shaman's trance. Much of what is known about shamanism focuses on objects and rituals, because that is all the uninitiated can see. But shamans see with much more than their eyes alone. Many sacred healers within indigenous and native communities are still following the ways of the ancestors. Uniquely, this film was written and directed by first time filmmaker Frances Ulman, who is also an initiated shaman, and a mentee of Altantsetseg. Previously Frances was a clinical psychologist in the USA, but left it all behind when the spirits called her onto her path. This is a film about a shaman, directed by a shaman. The close, personal relationship between these two women from different parts of the world is the alchemy of the film. It allows us into spaces within shamanism others have not brought to the screen. The weaving of similarities and profound differences between Altantsetseg and Frances emerges as an exploration of shamanism and much more. We see decolonisation as an action, the power of relationships, the wisdom of a living drum, myths of western psychology, and ways of balancing living sacredly with cellphones. Living in a world that doesn't always remember, here we are shown a way home to our hearts.

This film was made following the Shaman 95 Filmmaking Manifesto:
“This film is a living being. The film creates itself.”
• No pre-filming script
• No second takes
• No alteration of light and sound beyond what is natural, or already present on location
• No outsider film crew: All filming is done by those who are also on camera participating in the actions captured on film
• No false relationships: The main people on screen have longstanding and genuine relationships with each other off screen
• No false situations or reenactments: All situations, actions, and objects are part of the regular life of a shaman and those in community with shamans
• No pretending that humans made this film alone

However, he must confront an undercurrent of family conflict as he battles against his relatives' unsettling suspicions that his wife Martha is carrying his best friend Bigelow's child.

100 years after it was first published, Pulitzer and Nobel literature award winning writer Eugene O’Neill’s 1920’s story - ‘The First Man’ has been lovingly crafted as a feature film by a team of UK based film-makers led by auteur director Hardeep Giani - and this is his very first Feature film.
Director and Producer Hardeep Giani explains his vision:
'Eugene O’neill’s incredible script was a pleasure to make into a feature film.

What we wanted to do was to make this independent film for a modern audience – to produce a story examining the conflict of love in an environment of social and family prejudice, and how a bereavement can inflict psychosis in a grieving father.'
