Five things I've learned since launching Galley Press ✨📚

On a quiet November morning in 2020, I took a leap and launched Galley Press. Borders were closed, the streets of Subiaco were empty, and destination writing suddenly felt… pointless. But something told me Perth still needed beautifully crafted stories - even if no one could go anywhere.

💛 Nuts, right?

But from day one, of Subiaco believed in that vision, commissioning a small A5 mag to lift up local hospo + retail businesses doing it tough in 2020.

That tiny seed became Subiaco: Eat Shop Live (ESL) - now 18 editions and 80+ pages each, celebrating local people, places and purpose.

Since then, we’ve launched ARTForm, written thousands of words for Business News, written for the incomparable Sandra Devahasdin, and created personal memoirs with Cally Browning for some of Perth’s movers and shakers.

So here are five things you probably didn’t know about Galley Press:

1️⃣ It’s not Gallery Press.
Named after Gabi + Cally - and the “galley,” the first proof of a publication. So now you know.

2️⃣ Great stories start with great listening.
Publishing is about hearing people deeply - then amplifying what matters.

3️⃣ Small + nimble > big + bureaucratic.
Boutique is our superpower. (Also: our Christmas parties? Legendary.)

4️⃣ The right collaborators change everything.
Writers, designers, photographers, printers, sales - GP exists because of you.

5️⃣ Quiet early-morning nudges are usually right.
Some of our biggest leaps started with a whisper.

Five years. 20 publications. Thousands of words and images.
And we’re just getting started. ✨

Wow - what a night! On Saturday, it felt like WA’s entire tourism cohort had turned up in their glad rags for the biggest awards night of the year. Joining the City of Subiaco team to celebrate another brilliant year of activations, events and beautiful front covers inspired by Subi’s businesses and people, hopes were high that this would be their year.

So first off the ranks was a silver award for Excellence in Local Government Tourism before we all held our collective breath for the award for Festivals and Events. Up against some pretty big hitters (including last year’s winner Margaret River Region Open Studios), by the time the gold award was announced, the joy was palpable on our table.

Subi Blooms x Gather won - and what a deserved winner it really is.

Some facts: the 2025 festival attracted an amazing 37,000 visitors to Subiaco across Mother’s Day weekend and featured 15 large-scale floral installations alongside workshops, a month-long floral art installation, and community activities.

We dedicated our autumn magazine cover to one of the hundreds of images generated from this unique event, thought up by Laura Lewsey and her clever team.

As a Subi resident, I love the annual opportunity to peruse the displays before the masses arrive - and can’t think of another comparable event in Perth which creates such pleasure for all involved and the visitors who come in their droves over the weekend.

Congrats to you all and Galley Press couldn’t be prouder to be a small part of this blooming marvellous local success story.
