Five things I've learned since launching Galley Press ✨📚
On a quiet November morning in 2020, I took a leap and launched Galley Press. Borders were closed, the streets of Subiaco were empty, and destination writing suddenly felt… pointless. But something told me Perth still needed beautifully crafted stories - even if no one could go anywhere.
💛 Nuts, right?
But from day one, of Subiaco believed in that vision, commissioning a small A5 mag to lift up local hospo + retail businesses doing it tough in 2020.
That tiny seed became Subiaco: Eat Shop Live (ESL) - now 18 editions and 80+ pages each, celebrating local people, places and purpose.
Since then, we’ve launched ARTForm, written thousands of words for Business News, written for the incomparable Sandra Devahasdin, and created personal memoirs with Cally Browning for some of Perth’s movers and shakers.
So here are five things you probably didn’t know about Galley Press:
1️⃣ It’s not Gallery Press.
Named after Gabi + Cally - and the “galley,” the first proof of a publication. So now you know.
2️⃣ Great stories start with great listening.
Publishing is about hearing people deeply - then amplifying what matters.
3️⃣ Small + nimble > big + bureaucratic.
Boutique is our superpower. (Also: our Christmas parties? Legendary.)
4️⃣ The right collaborators change everything.
Writers, designers, photographers, printers, sales - GP exists because of you.
5️⃣ Quiet early-morning nudges are usually right.
Some of our biggest leaps started with a whisper.
Five years. 20 publications. Thousands of words and images.
And we’re just getting started. ✨
