According to Bilal Cleland Bilal Cleland, author of The Muslims in Australia, other early colonial records indicate a Muslim presence. The 1792-96 Norfolk Island Victualling Book mentions that in January 1796 the island received several Muslim sailors, and at least eight convicts who arrived in Australia after 1813 were of 'Arab or part-Arab' heritage. Cleland states

Evidence was given before an Immigration Committee in 1838 that over 100 settlers had organised for 1203 Indian [including Muslim] labourers to be brought in, and between 1837 and 1844 about 500 did arrive. [4]

Another group of Muslims who played an important role in nineteenth century Australia, in the centre and far north, were the 'Afghans', camel drivers from the Indian sub-continent. They played a vital role in the early exploration of the continent's north and, from 1870 to 1872, established the overland telegraph line between Adelaide and Darwin, which eventually linked Australia to London via India. [5] The Ghan – the train between Adelaide and Darwin – was named in recognition of the work of these Afghan cameleers.

In Holy Quran Allah Almighty clear that Tawakkul is not an option rather a requirement. Allah says in Quran in words: “…And put your trust in Allah if you are believers indeed” (Quran, 5: 23). When we talk about Tawakkul we say that we depend on Allah for everything and place reliance on Him. We trust on Allah on all things no matter its worldly affairs or related to Deen

Early camel arrivals to Western Australia, 1887:

The first camels to arrive in the colony came on ships SS Abergeldie and SS Yeoman, both coming from Karachi, arriving in Fremantle in October 1887. The shipping agents for the Abergeldie, J. & W. Bateman, were reported to be ‘somewhat astonished’ at the camels’ arrival: they had been sent a letter announcing the shipment, but the camels arrived before the letter.

The camels, numbering over 300, were the property of the company Meer Dost Khan & Co., and seem to have been brought out speculatively, as the animals were already in heavy use in other colonies for desert exploration and gold mining activities. However, Western Australians saw little use for them, and at several auctions held in the Beaconsfield vicinity in late 1887 and early 1888, most of the creatures remained unsold.

In fact, the experiment was such a disaster that Meer Dost Khan’s representatives ran out of money and could not feed the cameleers who had come over with the camels. These 23 men were living at Albert’s Piggery on Rockingham Road (somewhere near modern-day Clontarf Road) and were on the verge of starvation. At a Fremantle court hearing to solve the problem in January 1888, Saibdad Dumah Khan, a cameleer fluent in English, stated that he and his fellows had been sent out to keep the camels when they first arrived, but that there was no work for them now. For a while, they had been given jobs cutting wood in the bush around Hamilton Hill, but for some weeks they had been living at the piggery without any occupation and were starving.

They were eventually sent on to South Australia, where others in their line of work were waiting for them and their camels would be welcomed.

I'm Tarek Chamkhi, a documentary director from Perth, Western Australia. Around 5 years ago I used this forum to fundraise some cash to finish my debut documentary: G'day Cameleers which since has been released and is available on Al Chemiya and Amazon Prime (UK and USA) platforms. I'm very grateful for all donations has been made at the time to make my dream come true.

Today I'm trying to finish a similar project where I managed to execute most of the fieldwork filming and due thanks to some of our amazing sponsors, who helped to cover the cost, but I stuck to finish the post-production of this film and I need your help! as independent filmmakers and like all our peers, we cannot fund our entire filming project by ourselves; and such aspiring content desperately needs support and collaboration in the absence of official support and major fund.
