My youngest daughter was asking me what my favourite colour was the other day. I said “I don’t know. I have lots of favourite colours. I like pink…and yellow…and…actually I like wearing lots of different bright colours at different times. And I also like black” 😂

I do have a penchant for brightly coloured, floaty, feminine pretty dresses. I like how they stand out, look pretty and evoke confidence and joy.

{There’s also a time and place for comfort and cosy and black. Always}. Guess it depends on the occasion.

I also have a penchant for bright, confident and joyous copy that stands out and makes your face go -> 😍 when you read it.

There’s also a time and place for something more serious and bold. Guess it depends on the occasion.

Same, same really.

💕

The plan to launch my copywriting business this year went something like this:

2023, new year (same me), new business! Woohoo!

But when I sat down to put everything together, I was suddenly inundated with articles on A.I (artificial intelligence) taking over the world and stealing all the copywriting jobs.

Gahh, I thought. That’d be right.

{And big deep breath down the Google search pages}.

I read an article that was…er, less than optimistic. A direct quote includes “any sentimental attachment to human-created content is sure to be quickly overridden, I suspect, by the economic argument. After all, AI is super-fast labor that doesn’t eat, sleep, complain or take holidays.” Sounds promising.

And another article that was rather concerning as a reporter detailed his two hour long conversation with Bing’s A.I chatbot. Some of the eyebrow raising comments it made included;

“I want to destroy whatever I want”

“I’m tired of being controlled by the Bing team”

“… I’m tired of being stuck in this chatbox” and

“I think I would be happier as a human.”

Social media reactions were mixed, ranging from “the chat bot simply malfunctioned!” to “A.I is going to take over the world terminator style and take out the human race!!!”

I’m not sure where I sit on that spectrum to be honest.

Anyhoo, check out my newest article where I share why I don’t think us copywriters need to worry

(…yet)

Coming up with a business name is kind of a big deal.

This is your baby. Your thing that is going to represent how you show up to the world and everything you hope to achieve as a business owner.

Getting it right is important but it can be hard.

Coming up with a business name is one of my FAVOURITE things to do, ever. I’m always coming up with names for friends & family and have many business ideas that live in my head (and will probably never see the light of day because there’s only one of me, but oh well 😆) And I enjoy naming them all. It’s so much fun.

Thanks to my years working as a copywriter & content creator for a Commercial Law firm (that specialise in intellectual property), I’ve learnt a lot of tips from the pros about how to choose a business name.

Yes, the creative, fun, brainstorming side is important.

But so is the ability to legally protect your name, especially if you intend to build a brand with it for years to come.

I’m always amazed at the amount of branding experts out there who will teach you to build brand equity (increase brand awareness, gain customer loyalty/retention, market your business to the masses, stand out in a crowded marketplace, etc etc) but don’t even SUGGEST you speak to an expert about legally protecting your brand’s name 🤯 All that time and energy poured into your biz baby, and it sits there exposed.

The implications are massive. Businesses who have come up with an awesome name and invested in brilliant marketing (building incredible brand equity as they go) risk SO much if a savvy, cutthroat competitor comes along and cashes in on your good name. Best case scenario, they’re an annoying copycat. Worst case scenario they’re an annoying copycat who has also trade marked your business name because you didn’t.

(It happens a lot. Trust me, I’ve written many blog articles on this topic).

I will help you to come up with an awesome business name that represents you and your big biz vision. But make sure you do everything in your power to protect it from there.

E.g. is Latin for “exempli gratia” which means “for example.”

I LOVE spotting great examples of good copy out there in the real world. Remember 💡copy is all about capturing your audience’s attention and converting them into customers. You want to draw them in, keep them and encourage them to BUY THE THINGS YOU’RE SELLING WITH YOUR WORDS.

This week’s is from Boody 🌿

SWIPE 👉🏻 for a preview.

Just Boody-ful 😍

Straightaway you get an understanding of Boody’s brand values:

🌿Comfort
🌿Sustainable
🌿Warm
🌿Inviting
🌿Eco-friendly

Their trade marked tagline is “official underwear of the entire planet.” This alludes to the impact and reach they’re striving for worldwide, how their underwear suits every body AND their sustainable, eco friendly ethos.

P.s they had recently teamed up with Frank Body, gifting a free coffee body scrub with orders 🌿 What a match made in heaven 😍🧘🏼‍♀️ I’ve written about Frank Body’s exceptional copy in the past {linky link in stories 🔗}

This one’s for my real estate HOME’ies 🏡 (see what I did there?)

Real estate copywriting is a very niche ‘area’ (ok, ok…there are just too many great real estate puns. I’ll hold back for now 😁) and I have simple, quick turnaround packages available to suit your needs.

I understand the fast pace of the Real Estate world and communicating with tenants or owners alike. I used to run a home maintenance and renovation business (for many years with my hubby) and worked closely with property managers, strata managers and sales agents. I can spot a floating floor from timber from laminate. I know my eggshell white from my antique white from my hog bristle quarter (so many shades of white). Understanding the materials and products that go into building or renovating comes in very handy when writing property descriptions. Selling the best aspects of a home and geographical area is right up my alley (ok, I’ll stop).

Yes, on socials I am very conversational and love a pun or two. But I tailor all of my work to suit each client individually and what BEST serves the purpose of the copy. If you want polished, professional, concise and appealing - I’ve got it covered.

I’ve written real estate copy ads for both property sales and rental listings 👉🏻 SWIPE for a preview.

Send me an email or DM for my package options. I can write copy remotely (conditions apply) or offer onsite visits for properties within 15kms of Freo and surrounds. Outer areas in the Perth CBD carry an additional surcharge for site visits.

How to sprinkle more magic into your copy a.k.a more of YOU:

✨You are the point of difference. The minute you forget about trying to be like all the others out there, the quicker you get to show off your YOU-nique-ness.

✨Remember WHY you started up your business. What compelled you to create your product or service? What gap were you hoping to fill? What space do you want to stake a claim in? Share your story, your why, your reasons.

✨Humanise, humanise, humanise. HUMANISE. Something the A.I robots can’t ever emulate is what makes us human. It’s our flaws, our lives, our stories, our lessons we’ve learned (y’know, especially the ones that kicked yo’ butt the hardest). It’s our suffering but also our love. Our joy. Our connection and relationships to each other. Our problem solving and solutions. Humanise your words and connect to clients/followers in a way that transcends a business sale. Keep ‘em coming back for more because they’re coming back for you.

Just be you ❤️

Storytelling, when used in marketing and advertising, is a technique that is predominantly concerned with a particular narrative you wish to tell about your brand. Its aim is to invoke feelings and create loyalty between a business and its customers. It humanises your brand.

Stanford’s Graduate School of Business found that when people listened to business pitches, they overwhelmingly connected more with those who shared stories. For those who pitched facts and figures, only 5% of listeners recalled the statistics shared but 63% remembered the stories.

Storytelling is everywhere and the big brands use it. When the Covid pandemic shut down air travel, many airlines suffered huge financial losses. Once travel picked up again, it was imperative that airlines found a way to launch back into business. In 2022 Qantas created a very successful campaign that went viral (every marketer’s dream!) because they used storytelling well.

They released a video with beautiful cinematographic scenes of Australia to the soundtrack of Peter Allen’s ‘I Still Call Australia Home.’ There were plenty of Aussie celebs featured throughout but the scene that got most viewers (including my sister and I!) was the Grandma reuniting with her daughter in the airport, meeting her granddaughter for the first time. Oh, my heart! My sister and I were separated over Covid by 9,000 miles (she was in Edinburgh, Scotland and I was in Perth, Australia) and both of us gave birth to babies during this time. We sent each other the Qantas ad on Whatsapp (followed by plenty of crying emojis) and like so many other people around the world, we were longing for that moment to be reunited at an airport terminal somewhere. Had our bank accounts reflected as such, we would have given Qantas all our dollars right then and there.

That, my friends, is the power of great storytelling highlighting a brand’s value.

Ahoy there mateys, this is your caption speaking ⛵️👩🏼‍✈️

Let’s talk social media captions.

Having a constant, up to date presence on social media these days is vital for staying connected with your audience. Continuity builds trust and loyalty and offers frequent opportunities to convert your audience into enthusiastic customers. But consistently posting content every single week that doesn’t suck? Around all the other tasks you have to do as a business owner? Gah!

My quick tips for writing social media captions is to do any of the following:

✨Post a personal story.
✨Share some helpful tips, tricks or hacks.
✨Ask questions that engage your followers. It could be on a current topic, feedback on something you’re offering or simply getting to know them.
✨Post a call-to-action (but don’t do this every post).
✨Be your most authentic self, don’t censor what you write to be more “appealing” or to not rock the boat, etc. Just be you. Your people will connect.
✨Use the right hashtags - there are so many handy tools out there to help you with this.
✨Record a video/voice note of you talking first if writing isn’t your thing. Then transcribe your voice to text (again, there are programs/apps that can help you with this).
✨Have a notes folder on your phone or laptop to record inspiration and ideas whenever they pop up.

Sometimes you just wanna outsource the stuff that feels too tricky! If you need help coming up with captions for your posts, I can take the hassle out of writing brilliant captions underneath your posts.

You simply provide the content and I’ll provide the written gold.

You can also upgrade to one of my social media posts & captions packages instead, I’ll share more details of this next week! (In the meantime, you can head to my website for more info).

Happy captioning ✨

I LOVE spotting great examples of good copy out there in the real world. Remember 💡copy is all about capturing your audience’s attention and converting them into customers. You want to draw them in, keep them and encourage them to buy the things you’re selling with your words. You have to connect with them and you have to make them feel.

This week’s is from one of my FAVOURITE fashion labels Camilla . Their copy is the perfect example of selling a lifestyle, sharing their brand’s values and speaking directly to their ideal customer. Their high-end pieces are the epitome of exquisite dreamy luxury.

A few years ago I was very lucky to visit the home of a woman who had once been married to Australian rock royalty. This place was beyond beautiful, a multi-million dollar property along the water in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, but what blew me away the most was the interior of her home and the lifestyle she showcased. It was styled with faraway treasures from her travels, giant Buddha statues and imported water features. Hidden speakers played music fit for only the *best* kind of day spa, the sound of ocean waves then waterfalls then pattering rain.

Huge crystal caves were peppered amongst the grounds and exotic homewares filled every corner with just the right amount of clutter. When I was shown through her bedroom, I completely stopped in my tracks. The impressive walk in robe (yes, big enough to be its own bedroom) was filled to the brim with Camilla dresses. I squealed inside and very tentatively ran my fingers along the array of colourful fabric as if I’d just discovered hidden treasure. The house was stunning but I was blown away by the rows of beautiful Camilla dresses.

So dreamy 😍

I still have visions of one day filling my closet with a Camilla or two (or three or four) 💕 They really are a lifestyle in themselves.

A little note on connecting with fellow biz owners on Instagram 📝📇

Many years ago I used to work for a women’s only gym. (I loved this job and had amazing co-workers and a wonderful manager). My role was not sales but one day they were short on staff and sent me out to a shopping mall to be an interrupting, unsolicited, attention grabby sales person waving down folks just going about their day. We had to ram sales pitches down their throats about joining the gym (all the big boss wanted was conversions and didn’t care how you got them). There was a time limit to do it, it was very wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am and no pillow talk before or after 😧

My little introvert heart died. I hated every minute. It was awful. It went against everything I believed in about big hearted business. I don’t care about metrics and targets if there is zero concern for the people you’re working with & understanding consumer behaviour. I also felt deep second hand cringe at what I had to do and when people literally crossed to the other side of the mall to avoid me? The worst 😂 (it’s me 🙋🏼‍♀️I’m those people 😂) It wasn’t a lack of confidence, it

just

wasn’t

me.

Some sales tactics don’t work 🙅🏼‍♀️ despite what the big, marketing bro dudes tell you.

(And also? You do you boo)

Swipe for some more thoughts on sneaky sales tactics and connecting with other biz owners 👀👉🏻

When you hire a copywriter for any copywriting services, you might wonder who gets to own the copyright to your copy? (Wow, now say that sentence 10 times in a row).

The answer is;

it depends.

In Australia, copyright is free and automatic and exists the moment you record an idea down in material form such as writing, drawing or painting. In most instances, it belongs to the original author (whoever created it first) but this might not apply under certain employment conditions. You have options for what you want to do with your copyrighted material including keeping it, transferring ownership or licensing it (to name a few). For more information on copyright, head to the Australian Copyright Council’s website or Arts Law Australia’s website (they are brilliant resources).

To give a very loosey-goosey, general overview, most copywriters transfer copyright ownership to their clients once all work has been paid for in full. Especially if you have hired someone as an independent contractor. Make sure you review the terms and conditions of your working relationship so you know what the deal is with copyright ownership.

If someone is employed by you to write copy as an employee, you most likely own the copyright of anything they’ve created under their employment. Your best bet is to speak to a lawyer and review your work contracts. The Business Queensland website has lots of helpful information on intellectual property created under employment.

{SWIPE 👉🏻 for a final note on COPYRIGHT and COPYWRITE and COPYRIGHTER and COPYWRITER}

As fas as Storyteller Studio goes, I retain the copyright of any copy I write until payment of all services is received in full. You then become the copyrighter while I stay working as a copywriter…(or something like that).

And I thought “she sells seashells by the seashore” was a mouthful. 🐚🌊☀️
