This episode is about the moment every leader is quietly bracing for.

Marion Burchell, Managing Director of Azolla, has spent twenty years in the public sector and time with one of the big four, and she now advises governments and organisations on how to lead through exactly this kind of change. Azolla runs on word of mouth alone.

In this conversation, we cover how AI is reshaping the way we work and lead, why the pause might be the most underused skill in business, what separates real leadership from management, and how knowing your value lets you walk away from work that is not aligned. Marion also shares why the human factor is the part of leadership most of us have been trained to leave out.

If you lead a team, a business, or just yourself, there is something in this one for you.

Most business owners are hiding, and they do not even realise it.

Sue Pember coaches owners to write two job descriptions for themselves. One for the employee inside the business who does the delivery work. One for the owner, doing the business development that actually grows it. The reason matters. It is far too easy to stay busy and comfortable in the delivery, the work that feels safe, while the harder job of finding new clients quietly goes undone. Sue is clear that the business development is the real work, and it takes far more hours than most owners ever expect.

PROJECT RHINO
On the frontline of wildlife conservation in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Project Rhino brings together 65 conservation organisations with one shared mission: protecting rhinos, combating wildlife crime, and securing a future for wildlife across KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Together, our members help safeguard more than 800,000 hectares of protected land through anti-poaching initiatives, ranger support, environmental education, community engagement, and collaborative conservation action.

While rhinos remain at the heart of our mission, protecting them also helps conserve countless other species and the ecosystems on which both wildlife and people depend.

Monitoring. Protecting. Conserving. Together.

Hammers do not build houses. It is the line from Paul Claessen that reframes how to use AI entirely.

AI is the hammer, not the architect. Paul, a business coach with a background in software engineering, walks through the order most people get backwards. You architect what you are trying to achieve, you engineer it, you plan it, and only then do you let AI do the building. Start with AI and you are asking the hammer to design the house. Do the thinking first and the output changes completely.

There is a brutal truth about leadership that almost nobody is willing to post on LinkedIn. This week, Marion Burchell says it out loud.

Marion is the Managing Director of Azolla, a consulting firm that advises governments and some of the country’s biggest organisations, and she has spent decades watching leaders rise and fall. This week I sit down with her, and she does not hold back.

We get into the question AI is forcing every leader to confront about the last twenty years of their career. Why so many organisations preach wellbeing while quietly burning their people out. The difference between leading from ego and leading from capability, and how to tell which one you are. And why saying no to the wrong clients might be the most important decision you make this year.

What Marion said about what real leadership actually takes is something every business owner needs to hear.

Episode drops Friday.

Exclusive Episode 1 of 4 is now live.

I was joined in the studio with Kerrin Watson-Smith, my running coach and friend, and the founder of Chi-Me, a mental fitness framework that helps people train their mind with the same intention they give their body. This is also the opening episode of 1% Better, a four-part series where we run the same 5k together throughout the year and track how it gets faster.

In this conversation, we cover why the discipline it takes to train is the same discipline it takes to build a business, why small daily steps beat grand resolutions, and why the answer on a hard day can be as simple as putting your shoes on. Kerrin also shares why the limits you place on yourself are harder to beat than the ones others place on you, and how she is working through imposter syndrome as she steps into the business owner role.

Wherever your starting line is, that is exactly where you start. Listen now on The Real Biz Life Chronicles Podcast. Links in the comment section.

Views feel like progress. Whether they turn into customers is another question entirely.

Some of the busiest looking accounts I see are bringing in zero leads, because there is no strategy underneath the posting. Chasing every trend might spike your impressions, but if none of it speaks to the people you actually want to reach, it will never turn into work.

The plan comes first.

Reading this one, my chest tightened, because I have sat in that car park too.

If you are the steady hand everyone leans on, please know the exhaustion underneath it is far more common than anyone admits out loud. Running low happens when you generate the calm for everyone and never let a single person refuel you. The smallest first step is letting one trusted person see the tired version of you and taking them up on the help they are willing to offer.

If you have ever rebuilt your face in a lift before a meeting, episode 150 will feel like company. Listen now. Link in the comments section.

People rarely come to you the first time they see you. Tristan Peirce Landscape Architects Pool & Garden Design shares the truth every visual business needs to hear, that presence is built by showing up consistently across platforms, not by one perfect post.

He notices it in his own buying habits, seeing something once, then again, then finally acting on it. For a brand built on beautiful work, turning up regularly is the whole game.
