Hunt goes on for man who murdered Lucille 55 years ago;

Lucille Butterworth was last seen waiting for a bus in Hobart's northern suburbs on an August evening in 1969.

The 20-year-old aspiring model had just finished work as a typist at a radio station and was on her way to meet her fiance John Fitzgerald.

A coroner's 2016 report ruled Ms Butterworth was murdered by Geoffrey Charles Hunt, who strangled her in his car after she accepted a lift.

Her body has never been found despite extensive searches.

Mr Hunt, who denied any knowledge during the inquest of what happened to Ms Butterworth, has never been charged.

Tasmania's director of public prosecutions determined in 2017 there was not enough admissible evidence to charge Mr Hunt.

Almost 55 years since her disappearance, investigators have renewed calls for information they hope can deliver justice for Ms Butterworth and her family.

Detective Inspector Mark Burke said police had received new information this year, but no additional intelligence specific to Mr Hunt.

"Some witnesses have come forward with information that was put forward in the coronial (inquiry)," he said on Friday.

"We believe there are people in the community who know what's happened to Lucille ... and we'd like to hear from them."

Tasmania Police previously publicly apologised for their handling of the case after the coronial inquiry heard of multiple investigative failures.

Mr Hunt was jailed for 25 years in 1976 after pleading guilty to ra**ng and murdering young Hobart car saleswoman Susan Knight.

Two officers who gave evidence at the inquest said Mr Hunt confessed to killing Ms Butterworth when they initially questioned him about Ms Knight.

They said Mr Hunt's confession was not formally recorded because they "still had quite a lot to do" in relation to charges relating to Ms Knight.

Mr Hunt's statement was not followed up because a detective inspector said it was the "wrong track", according to the coronial report.

Senior officers initially viewed Ms Butterworth as a runaway, rather than a "proper" missing person case.

Efforts were made in 2000 to continue the investigation but an interview with Mr Hunt conducted that year was inexplicably lost.

"I can't undo the ills of the past but I can apologise to the Butterworth family for the matter (and) how it was investigated," then-Commissioner Darren Hine said in 2016.

Ms Butterworth was last seen wearing orange work clothes and a dark coat.

She was killed on a stretch of the Lyell Highway, about halfway between Granton and New Norfolk, north of the bus stop in suburban Claremont, the coroner ruled.

Police have reminded people information can be reported anonymously.

"This is a tragic case that has caused a family massive pain and suffering," Det Insp Mark Burke said.

Thousands of fire ant nests infest Qld properties;

Parts of Queensland have as many fire ants as Texas - a hotbed of the uncontrolled infestation that costs the US billions of dollars each year.

Dr Robert Puckett is an American expert on invasive ant species and he's followed Australia's efforts to eradicate fire ants since they were discovered in Brisbane 23 years ago.

He's just toured infested parts of southeast Queensland and has echoed stories from locals about a shocking build up of the super-pest inside the narrow, U-shaped band where eradication efforts are focused.

"Some of the densities are approaching what we see in Texas on pasture land," says the entomologist, from Texas A&M University.

"The higher the density inside the suppression zone, the greater the risk ants could be moved out, across the eradication band, and be deposited elsewhere in Australia."

The observation is no surprise to the likes of Stuart Webber who volunteers his time looking for and treating thousands of fire ant nests in the Logan area, south of Brisbane.

He's most worried about the high-density infestations he keeps finding along the Logan and Albert rivers as fire ants can use their bodies to form floating rafts and invade new areas.

A couple of months ago, at a riverside property at Waterford, he spent 30 hours treating more than 2000 nests, but reckons that was only half of them.

"I worry about the next flood. This is the panic I've got," he tells AAP.

Australia has just poured hundreds of millions of dollars of extra cash into its war on fire ants but even so, what's being spent is a drop in the bucket compared to what annual expenses will be if the battle is lost.

Fire ants attack crops and livestock, driving down agricultural productivity. They swarm and kill native species. They push up health care costs as medics treat painful stings that sometimes kill.

They eat electrical infrastructure, and can render backyards and sports grounds useless without ongoing treatment to keep them at bay.

Biosecurity analysts told a recent Senate inquiry that Australia could lose 2.8 per cent of its GDP to fire ants - an economic hit equivalent to "half a COVID" each and every year.

The Invasive Species Council has long been worried about rising densities in the suppression area ringed by the active eradication zone.

It's a vast swathe of the southeast covering Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold Coast and extends west to Gatton. Many of those locations won't see active eradication for some time.

Reece Pianta is the council's fire ant specialist and is unsurprised by reports of thousands of nests on some properties.

He says suppression is not part of the national eradication program and is instead managed by the Queensland government's complementary Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce.

It provides free baits but the onus is on property owners, tenants and farmers to source and apply it.

Mr Webber say it's obvious - based on the volume of nests in his area - that people aren't doing that at anywhere near the scale required to keep ant numbers in check.

He says he recently went to another property near his home that had about 1000 nests - and that's not unusual, especially in horse paddocks.

The Invasive Species Council wants authorities to take a fresh look at the adequacy of suppression efforts and believes it should be a core function of the eradication program.

"This is for the benefit of the whole country. Suppression is a fundamental part of successful eradication," Mr Pianta says.

The National Fire Ant Eradication Program says local, state and federal governments are already treating fire ants on land they own and manage in the suppression area.

From next month, people in Ipswich, Logan and select suburbs in Brisbane and the Gold Coast can order a free treatment kit to manage fire ants on their land.

Treatment will be sent twice a year in a bid to keep fire ant numbers down.

🚢 **Earliest Known Shipwreck Uncovered in Perth's Swan River!**

Exciting news for history and maritime enthusiasts! 🌊 Maritime archaeologists have identified the earliest known shipwreck in the Swan River—a cargo barge that met its fate during a storm in 1882. This incredible discovery offers a rare glimpse into life in 19th-century Perth.

Patrick Morrison, a maritime archaeologist at the WA Museum, uncovered this "well-preserved" wreck 14 meters below the surface near Point Walter last year, using detailed 3D maps of the riverbed. 🗺️

Back in the day, the Swan River served as a major river highway, bustling with activity. The barge, owned by Alfred Dearden, was used to supply stone for road construction around Perth’s railway station. Towed by a steamship, these barges were vital to the city's growth and development.

The riverbed might seem featureless, but it's full of hidden history waiting to be discovered. This shipwreck is a fascinating reminder of Perth's rich maritime past! 🌟

Perth school bans Year 12 muck-up day in a controversial move. Carine SHS warns students no muck-up day pranks are allowed for the last day of Year 12.

A public high school in Perth’s north has banned Year 12s from holding “muck-up day” celebrations to mark their last day of formal schooling.

Carine Senior High School warned students via email they risk being shut out of their own graduation ceremony if they bring water guns or water bombs to school on their final day next month.

The crackdown comes after some students sprayed each other with water guns during final-day antics last year.

In 2017, a waterlogged mattress had to be removed from the school swimming pool after students dumped it there.

W**d killer was sprayed on the oval in another muck-up day incident several years ago.

The email sent to Carine’s Year 12 students said their final day would start with a shared breakfast and reminded them the school would not tolerate “any form of the muck-up day”.

“There will be a fun and engaging final day planned for you to finish your high school experience positively with your peers,” the email said.

“We will not tolerate any form of muck-up day and any behaviour outside of the code of conduct that impacts any member of the school community will be dealt with swiftly and strictly. This includes bringing water guns or water bombs to school.

“Any behaviour that sits outside of our usual code of conduct may result in your suspension from school and your family being informed that you are not invited to the graduation ceremony.”

To reinforce the message, parents of Year 12s were also sent a letter warning that inappropriate behaviour in their final days could even result in students being barred from sitting their exams at school or from receiving a reference.

It said inappropriate behaviour included any that damaged school property, disrupted the functioning of the school or had the potential to negatively impact its reputation.

Department of Education schooling operations executive director Steve Watson said Carine’s final day for Year 12s would include a schedule of celebratory games and events that was yet to be finalized.

“Every year, schools decide how final day celebrations will proceed as part of normal end-of-year processes,” he said.

“Secondary schools communicate information and expectations to their students about appropriate behaviour to celebrate this milestone.”

Schools across Australia have focused on phasing out muck-up day mayhem by providing students with other fun activities, such as a colour run.

Pranks that have gone too far have led to harsh consequences for WA students in previous years.

In 2021, the prestigious boys’ school Aquinas College sent all 170 Year 12s home after a teacher was hit in a water bomb fight.

In 2020, Newman College in Churchlands barred 19 boys from attending their school ball after classrooms were vandalized during late-night antics where students threw eggs at windows, greased door k***s and glued tables and chairs together.

More than a decade ago, in 2011, the entire Year 12 cohort at Churchlands Senior High School was sent home in disgrace after students ran amok and dumped fertilizer, sealant, dog food and eggs in the school swimming pool — putting it out of action for days.
