SAPATU RECEIVES FREE DRIVING LESSONS AFTER BEING GIFTED CAR

IN PHOTO: Maggie Sapatu, the woman who walked from Mwinilunga to Lusaka to attend President Hakainde Hichilemaā€™s inauguration, has received free driving lessons from Miracle Driving School following the donation of a Toyota Vitz by Jelumu Zambia Limited.

Ms. Sapatu attracted nationwide attention after undertaking the long journey to Lusaka, saying she wanted to witness President Hichilemaā€™s inauguration and express her appreciation for his leadership.

Her journey has since turned her into a social media sensation, attracting widespread goodwill and support from members of the public and various organisations.

The latest gesture comes shortly after Brian Chanda gifted Ms. Sapatu a mobile phone.

Jelumu Zambia Limited has also appealed to other vehicle dealers and companies to come on board and support the person who accompanied Ms. Sapatu on her journey, saying it would be a beautiful gesture for both travellers to receive similar assistance.

Meanwhile, Miracle Driving School has offered Ms. Sapatu free driving lessons to help her learn how to operate her newly acquired vehicle.

The driving school says the lessons will enable her to confidently return to Solwezi behind the wheel of her Toyota Vitz.

Ms. Sapatuā€™s story continues to attract attention, with more individuals and organisations coming forward to support her following her remarkable journey to Lusaka.

SHIWANGā€™ANDU HEALTH PLANNER ARRESTED OVER ALLEGED K50,000 CONFLICT OF INTEREST

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Chinsali has arrested and charged Shiwangā€™andu District Health Office Planner Nicodemus Kalasani over an alleged conflict of interest involving K50,000.

ACC Head of Corporate Communications Joseph Mwenya says Kalasani, 46, has been charged with one count of conflict of interest, contrary to the Public Procurement Act No. 8 of 2020.

Mr Mwenya says investigations established that between November 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, Kalasani allegedly failed to disclose an indirect pecuniary interest amounting to K50,000 in Sahmilz Investments Limited.

The ACC alleges that the company was owned by a friend of Kalasani and that money was deposited into his bank account following each successful contract awarded to the company.

The alleged non-disclosure relates to the procurement of tools and equipment for use by Community-Based Volunteers at the Shiwangā€™andu District Health Office.

Kalasani, of Teleni Village in Shiwangā€™andu District, has since been released on bond and is expected to appear in court soon.

The allegations have not yet been proven in court, and Kalasani is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

CHANDA WITHDRAWS KANCHIBIYA ELECTION PETITION, PRAISES HICHILEMA

Former Kanchibiya Member of Parliament Sunday Chanda has withdrawn his petition challenging the outcome of the 2026 Kanchibiya parliamentary election, saying the interests of the people and development should come before political differences.

Mr Chanda, who had challenged the election of Sampa Muswema of the National Restoration Party for Unity and Progress (NRPUP), alleged violence, intimidation, corruption, procedural breaches and widespread non-compliance with the Electoral Process Act.

However, announcing his decision yesterday, Mr Chanda said President Hakainde Hichilema had proved to be a reliable leader by listening and responding to concerns he raised on roads, bridges, schools, health facilities, electricity, communication and Constituency Development Fund (CDF) implementation in Kanchibiya.
Mr Chanda said despite previously being one of President Hichilemaā€™s strongest critics while the President was in opposition, the two had managed to work together for the benefit of the constituency.

He said the collaboration had resulted in tangible development, including improved roads and bridges, schools, health facilities and other projects.

Mr Chanda said he would continue supporting President Hichilemaā€™s vision for Zambia outside Parliament wherever it serves the interests of the people.

He also called for national unity and cautioned against tribal politics, stressing that Zambia belongs to all citizens regardless of tribe, political affiliation, gender or background.

ā€œI chose to put development above politics,ā€ Mr Chanda said.

NGIMBU, CHITEME OPPOSE PETITIONS CHALLENGING THEIR ELECTIONS

Independent Zambezi Central MP-elect Raphael Ngimbu and Nkana MP-elect Alexander Chiteme have separately opposed petitions seeking to nullify their elections, describing the allegations of electoral malpractice as unsubstantiated.
In his response to a petition filed by UPND candidate Dennis Mano before the Lusaka High Court, Mr Ngimbu denied the allegations and maintained that he was duly elected and declared winner of Zambezi Central Constituency.
Mr Ngimbu accused Mr Mano of engaging in alleged corrupt practices and electoral malpractice during the campaign period, on polling day and thereafter. He also denied campaigning on polling day, saying he was at home on bed rest and that any campaigning by his agents was done without his knowledge, authorisation or approval.
Mr Ngimbu, who polled 8,339 votes against Mr Manoā€™s 7,816, has asked the court to dismiss the petition with costs and uphold his election.
Meanwhile, Mr Chiteme has opposed a petition by UPND candidate Francis Mukuka, challenging his election in Nkana Constituency.
Mr Chiteme, who contested on the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) ticket, denied allegations of violence and intimidation, arguing that no complaints involving him or his agents were reported to the Zambia Police Service or the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
He further rejected claims that election results were altered and disputed allegations involving interference with electricity at polling stations, intimidation of observers and irregular transportation of election materials.
Mr Chiteme said he was also sick and on bed rest before and during the elections, maintaining that neither his agents nor supporters engaged in intimidation or violence at polling stations.
He argued that some of the allegations contained in the petition amounted to hearsay and should be expunged from the affidavit.
Mr Chiteme polled 19,344 votes against Mr Mukukaā€™s 9,359 votes and has asked the court to dismiss the petition, maintaining that the allegations are not supported by evidence.
