INDUS AGE PERTH SAYS..!! This is a story worth knowing. Dr Ramya Raman for RACGP President has been elected President-elect of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners - RACGP, Australiaโs largest professional organisation for general practice.
And behind the title is a remarkable Australian journey. Raised in Orange in regional NSW, Dr Raman went on to become a specialist GP, practice owner, medical educator, academic and health advocate. Today, she is RACGP Vice-President and Chair of RACGP Western Australia.
Now she is set to lead the College nationally.
In the RACGP presidential election, Dr Raman received 5,386 votes from 9,866 votes cast โ a clear endorsement from her professional colleagues. She will formally take over as President on 19 November 2026.
But perhaps what makes this story particularly meaningful to the Indian Australian community is the bridge she represents.
Dr Raman has represented Australia at the Australian Indian Youth Dialogue. Her journey reflects something we see across our community every day: people who build their lives in Australia, contribute to the country, and eventually find themselves shaping the institutions that matter to all Australians.
Her story is not simply about reaching the top.
It is about service.
It is about education.
It is about advocacy.
And it is about understanding healthcare from the consultation room, the classroom, the practice, the community and the policy table.
Her priorities for general practice are equally significant: valuing GP care, protecting continuity of care, backing doctors, strengthening the professionโs voice and preparing general practice for the future.
For the Indian Australian community, this is a moment to celebrate.
Not because someone of Indian connection has reached a prominent position.
But because an Australian doctor with deep professional experience, a commitment to community and a remarkable record of leadership has earned the confidence of her peers to lead one of the countryโs most important medical organisations.
