Hey guys,

So we’ve been busy today, but not how we’d planned that’s for sure. Overnight someone decided to take some anger out on the studio window and another shop front in the complex. Well done to the Queensland Police Service though who have apparently identified and arrested said offender. So now we’re waiting on the glass people to secure it and then replace it… until then it’s all a little unknown so please bear with us!

It’s been a week.

We’re hitting the pause button for a while, taking in the twilight over a couple of drinks and remembering a mate who unexpectedly passed a couple days ago. Michael helped me out working on Ivy (our beloved Mustang) and milling up a bunch of timber for the studio. All the planks that we used for the architraves, kick plates and the ceiling feature were cut down and dressed in Michael’s back yard.

It’s a new week coming up. Let’s all make the most of it.

I’m backing up my grumpy post with some positivity - not letting that s**t ruin my day completely.

Today is a planning day. Emerson Gledhill is in the live room with me - he has three new tracks to record next week (I’ve had a listen, none of them are terrible 🤣). With order of march established, time for a cheeky tickle of the ol’ ivories…tune in the same time next week for progress updates!

Welcome to hump day, everyone! Let’s kick off with the good news first:

Black Dog Music is now officially available for recording and dry-hire sessions. After a couple of test runs, everything seems to be (finally) working nicely.

And now the bad news.

The studio doors will be closing EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY for at least a week. Maybe longer. Thanks to the latest round of thievery by a client, I will be installing a security camera in the live room, as well as digital locks on all the doors. Until I find the funds (and, quite frankly, the will to keep on doing this), y’all are gonna have to find another place to play.

I’m not made of money. Incidents like this - along with blown speakers, damaged microphones and amplifiers upended on the floor - really eat into the ol’ bank account, which means I have a few options. I can raise the room fees (I’m already one of the cheapest rooms in Brisbane, so that’s not necessarily off the table). I can make you bring ALL of your own gear. Or I can stick a camera in the room so I know who to blame, and whom to potentially arrange for them to pop into their local courthouse at some appointed time and kindly explain themselves.

Tracey and I can’t afford to keep absorbing these sorts of losses. Even without breakages and thievery, what money the studio DOES make pays the rent and keeps the lights on. That’s it. It’s not paying the mortgage - it’s not even covering my fuel bill. So anything else means we have to dip into our savings.

I’m genuinely sorry that I am inconveniencing folks for a bit. I’m even more sorry that I have to resort to these measures because of a few as****es.

Gratitude post:

A few weeks ago, I had a lovely lady come to the studio and hand me a shopping bag chockers with LPs and kids records that had been in her family for decades.

For those of you who don’t know, the BDM site was (once upon a time) a record store - and I think that until recently, Google still showed it as such. So if you read the note that Nicola wrote me, one might reasonably deduce that she still believed this to be the case, and pretty much all ensuing conversation revolved around Nicola believing it was a record store, and me pretending that it was. And that she is subsequently slightly embarrassed that I humoured her.

Truth be told, I was pretending for my own sake - I was embarrassed that Google had led her astray because I hadn’t updated the listing. Nicola - if you’re out there - thank you for your kindness.

I think there’s something in this for all of us. Don’t you?

Welcome to the weekend, legends!

Very quickly - could all drummers please start bringing their own thrones to rehearsals? The Ludwig keeps coming apart and I don’t want anyone getting hurt over it.

I just wanna go over the Rules Of The PA for a second. Can everyone please remember - “Desk first, desk last” when it comes to powering things on and off. Recently I found both monitors turned to 11 (yes, they actually go to 11) and they had been left on when the desk was switched off. Must have caused an awful bang. Anyway, the tweeter driver in one side is now blown and has to go in for repair. So if we could all make sure we get the sequence right, that would be amazing.

As I write this, I have a very helpful chap putting my control room together in some semblance of a semi-functional studio - rather than the non-functional electric spaghetti that has been plaguing me for over a year. Which means I’ll be able to start doing recording sessions again and letting the place out for dry hire. So hooray for that!

Even better, I’ll be able to start putting the finishing touches on the place - that Bluetooth receiver, podcasting gear, maybe a screen for karaoke…who knows?
