Gratitude post:

A few weeks ago, I had a lovely lady come to the studio and hand me a shopping bag chockers with LPs and kids records that had been in her family for decades.

For those of you who don’t know, the BDM site was (once upon a time) a record store - and I think that until recently, Google still showed it as such. So if you read the note that Nicola wrote me, one might reasonably deduce that she still believed this to be the case, and pretty much all ensuing conversation revolved around Nicola believing it was a record store, and me pretending that it was. And that she is subsequently slightly embarrassed that I humoured her.

Truth be told, I was pretending for my own sake - I was embarrassed that Google had led her astray because I hadn’t updated the listing. Nicola - if you’re out there - thank you for your kindness.

I think there’s something in this for all of us. Don’t you?

Good news, everyone!

Welcome to the weekend, legends!

Very quickly - could all drummers please start bringing their own thrones to rehearsals? The Ludwig keeps coming apart and I don’t want anyone getting hurt over it.

I just wanna go over the Rules Of The PA for a second. Can everyone please remember - “Desk first, desk last” when it comes to powering things on and off. Recently I found both monitors turned to 11 (yes, they actually go to 11) and they had been left on when the desk was switched off. Must have caused an awful bang. Anyway, the tweeter driver in one side is now blown and has to go in for repair. So if we could all make sure we get the sequence right, that would be amazing.

As I write this, I have a very helpful chap putting my control room together in some semblance of a semi-functional studio - rather than the non-functional electric spaghetti that has been plaguing me for over a year. Which means I’ll be able to start doing recording sessions again and letting the place out for dry hire. So hooray for that!

Even better, I’ll be able to start putting the finishing touches on the place - that Bluetooth receiver, podcasting gear, maybe a screen for karaoke…who knows?

Good news, everyone!

Whilst away in Adelaide, I came across a new piece of kit for the studio. This bad boy will let you stream from your phone, iPad or laptop directly to the PA. Gone are the days of holding your phone speaker to the microphone in a vain attempt to pick up that lick buried deep in the mix, or to convince your bandmates that you are in fact right.

It’ll live permanently in the room for your audio streaming pleasure. Once I’ve got it figured out, I’ll leave instructions laying around somewhere.

Good news, everyone!

For your convenience, the new (ish) mixer is now wall-mounted. And there are some extra spots for microphones and cables. I’ll add some cable strain relief points shortly - but not today! I am presently holed up in my backyard with Tracey, the felines and a refreshing beverage whilst congratulating ourselves on being Masters of the Universe (yeah I know, but it was camp as and nobody really remembers much of it).

Anyway, um…hooray! Less stuff taking up floor space.

Good news, everyone!

I’ve finally gotten my procrastinating arse to the studio to swap out the amplifiers - I really hope y’all like them! The Bugera is all-valve, so a cheeky little warm-up before full noise would be nice. For the power and standby switches, down is OFF and up is ON. There’s a foot switch in the back of it if you wanna play with that. But please (pretty please) DO NOT mess with the impedance settings/jacks on the head or the cab. They are all on the back panels so it shouldn’t be an issue, but just saying. If someone gets it wrong, the amp will be smoked. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter 😊

There’s heaps more real estate in the room now, and the next bit is mounting the mixer on the wall. All in good time.

Welcome to the weekend, champions!

I’m off to WA tomorrow for a couple of weeks. I haven’t been able to get over to swap out the bass amps yet, so I’m afraid y’all are gonna have to wait a little bit. Tracey will be around to field anything while I’m gone, otherwise everything will just kick on as usual.

A couple more things. Tracey and me have had a bit of a confab about Black Dog Music, and we have collectively agreed to take the studio off the market for now. There will be some changes re: the production side of things, but I’ve decided to hang around a bit longer.

Oh, and there’s a new piece of kit coming to pair with the 210…

Happy Tuesday, everyone! And good news!

As hinted at in yesterday’s post (thank you everyone for your support and positive vibes - I’ve needed it) I have in fact purchased some new kit for the room.

The ol’ Ampeg/410 rig is getting a little tired, and is gonna be pulled out of service…well, for a service. Might go into backline hire eventually. Anyway, I’ve got a lovely little Fender 500 combo in a 210 cabinet for your “bottom end” pleasure.

*ahem*

Anyway, expect it to be in service before the weekend. Please enjoy it and don’t feckin’ break it!
