The Mawson Trail is one of Australia’s most iconic gravel rides — rolling farmland, historic townships, picturesque wine country and, most importantly, some seriously top-notch gravel roads.

This October 19–25, the Outback to Oasis ARA Ride for Good takes on 365km from Hallett to Adelaide over five days of riding. It’s a chance to experience South Australian gravel at its best while riding for something bigger.

The ride raises funds for the ARA Fund, building a lasting legacy through an endowment that supports Australian charities including Starlight Children’s Foundation, MND Australia, Dementia Australia, National Breast Cancer Foundation and Children’s Cancer Institute.

I’ll be there with my bike and camera, documenting the adventure along the way and producing a souvenir coffee table book for riders to take home.

And it’s not all watts and dusty bottles. There’ll be plenty of wine and dining at some of South Australia’s best wineries and restaurants, finishing with a celebratory dinner at Penfolds Magill Estate. 🍷

Entries are currently discounted, but only until 29 August.

So, if you’ve been looking for an excuse to get the gravel bike out, explore South Australia and do a bit of good along the way, this might just be the ride for you.

It’s always a strange mix of emotions when a race comes to an end.

There’s the relief — no more rushing around in the heat, chasing turnarounds, juggling transfers, decoding road closures and stressing about being in the right place at exactly the right time.

But that relief is balanced by the feeling you get when you finish a great book and immediately wish there were a few more chapters.

And so, as the pages close on another edition of Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, I’m left feeling incredibly fortunate. Fortunate for the memories, the new friends, the new places and, most of all, the privilege of being able to do this crazy job and tell a little of the story through my cameras.

So here’s my final gallery from a spectacular stage around Nice. One last taste of the racing, the chaos, the emotion and everything in between.

Now it’s back to Tasmania, where I can finally unpack the cameras, slow things down and watch the stages with my two daughters. Hopefully some of the love I have for this sport — and for watching these incredible female athletes push themselves to their limits — rubs off on them too.

Zwift Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift

The longest stage of the lot — and I only had a roll-out and a finish to work with. I was expecting slim pickings from behind the lens.

Turns out, it was anything but.

A tasty little roll-out in Sisteron was just the amuse-bouche, before the full degustation in Nice. A supercharged finish, plenty of drama, and a smorgasbord of post-race emotion.

And then there was Demi Vollering, getting her just desserts after yesterday’s Hunger Games. Revenge is best served cold… preferably with a finish-line backdrop and a few cameras pointed her way. Zwift Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift

Last time I was on Mont Ventoux, Chris Froome lost his bike. This time, I just lost the plot.

Great to be back on the mountain — and what a vibe! The IRIS and Zwift turned Ventoux into one giant party: dance-offs, a giant squirrel, flags flying, beers flowing and merch everywhere.

Then Katarzyna Niewiadoma Phinney attacked and went solo and the crowd absolutely exploded. 🔥

But somehow, the biggest cheer of the day may have been topped by Alison Jackson casually grabbing a burger. 🍔😂

What’s a bike race without a little argy-bargy?

If it’s not with the gendarmes at the road closures, it’s in the media scrum at the finish. I’ve discovered the secret to winning over the gendarmes though… a couple of caps handed out from the car window. Amazing how quickly that greases the wheels.

The finish-line scrum today was all knees, elbows and cameras flying everywhere, but I managed to sneak in and grab the shot.

Apart from that, it was a surprisingly smooth day on Tour. I even managed to fit in two swims—one before the stage and one after. Not a bad way to bookend another hot day at Zwift Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift

A fast and furious day for the riders… and for us chasing the race.
The route was basically a GPS stress test. Gravel roads, lanes barely wide enough for a baguette, climbs so steep they felt vertical, descents that had the brakes filing for workers’ compensation, and roughly 4.7 million corners. I spent most of the day plastered against the passenger window like an emotionally supportive goldfish.

If you get motion sickness, I’d strongly recommend crossing cycling photographer off your list of career options.

Meanwhile, the riders somehow made it all look effortless. Another absolute cracker of a stage with the racing full gas, attacks flying, and a finish that kept everyone guessing until the line.

I wasn’t sure if I was dealing with heat stroke or if I’d genuinely just lost the plot.

Amid all the noise and chaos of the time trial, Pauline sat completely motionless, almost in a trance, calmly waiting for her moment. Photographers were packed in shoulder to shoulder around her, then suddenly there was a gap. I dropped to one knee on the tarmac, instantly turning it into a medium-rare skillet.

I rubbed my eyes—which was probably a terrible idea thanks to the sunscreen—and when I looked back, there it was.

Perched perfectly on Pauline’s knee was a tiny yellow butterfly.

Three frames… and it was gone.

Stage 3 of Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift avec Zwift

Climbing electric fences to dodge bearded mountain goats, the unmistakable aroma of wet dog, tractors painted like sports cars, crowds battling over merch… and that’s all before the race really got going.

Then came an inspiring ride from Sigrid Haugset. A fearless solo victory, leaving absolutely everything out on the road before being greeted at the finish with the biggest hug from Mum.

Cycling is beautifully wonderfully weird sometimes… and that’s exactly why I love it. Zwift

Stage 2 Le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, I sweated approximately a million drops, ran far more kilometres than any photographer should, and climbed a few walls that definitely weren’t built to be climbed—all with cameras swinging around my neck.

Questionable life choices? Maybe.
Worth it for cycling photography? Every single time.
