We knew sailing from New Zealand to Australia across the Tasman Sea during winter was going to be challenging and it was, but we did it! We left Marsden Cove, NZ July 6th and had to sail north to avoid a low coming west from Australia. We encountered some rough weather as it passed below us and at one point the wind jumped to 35 knots so we turned downwind to run with it. The wind shifted to the north so we had to sail south, then it died and we turned west again.

The weather wasn’t the only challenge as our escape hatches started leaking pretty much right away. We debated turning back but Fabio was able to manage the leak with a sort of putty called Stay Afloat and the bilge pumps. We were certainly happy to arrive in Bundaberg, Australia safe & sound on July 17th. Normally we would have posted updates during the trip but I (Kristin) was quite seasick for most of it and had blurry vision for a bit from the scopolamine patches.
🤪
Yoda was a champ on this trip and was cleared into Australia only a few hours after arrival. ❤️

We’re excited to be in Australia and are looking forward to connecting with the fellow sailors and divers here! 😊

When we swapped our catamaran for a campervan we didn’t realize how much we were going to learn; not only about managing resources but ourselves. What’s clear is our love for exploring remote places and a sense of adventure. Tap the link to join us as we get out of our comfort zone exploring New Zealand’s beautiful South Island.

The weight of things. The burden of fear. The endless list of spares.
Be prepared. Be nimble. Which one is it?
We’ve made it to New Zealand, land of sailors, of victorious racers, of people who know the difference between a boat that moves and a boat that drags.
They say don’t head out unprepared. That’s how you end up as a cautionary tale.
So, we carry what we need and only what we need.
But what exactly is that?
Turns out, serenity isn’t found in stuff. It’s in trust. And the less we carry, the freer we feel.
A Cromox chain. A Maxwell windlass. An Ultra anchor. These aren’t just gear, they’re peace of mind.
Because out here, a good night’s sleep depends on what’s under the waterline.
And that’s something worth the weight.

Sunshine, full sails, and the best company we could ask for…until we tried to set the hook and boat life reminded us who’s boss!
But with our friends WEsail aboard, we took the challenge head on and turned lemons into lemonade. Or more accurately… grapes into wine, thanks to Waiheke Island. 😜

This week’s video felt like a series of test runs—for rigging, for systems… and maybe even for ourselves. But there’s nowhere quite like Auckland for a reset; from sailing to city streets to forests, it was just what we needed to prepare for what’s next. Tap the link in comments to watch now!
