We spend so much of our lives chasing the next version of ourselves.

Do better. Be better. Next level. Next goal. Next breakthrough.

And maybe growth does sometimes look like that.

But maybe sometimes... growth actually looks like this. ๐ŸŒพ

Your breathing slowing down without you even trying.
Your shoulders softening without having to remind yourself to relax.
Sitting somewhere beautiful and feeling no urge to reach for your phone.
Laughing more easily.
Feeling safe enough to do absolutely nothing โ€” without the guilt.

Those moments rarely make it onto our achievement lists.

But I wonder if they're actually some of the greatest signs that something inside us has genuinely changed.

Not because we've become someone new.

But because we've finally stopped fighting ourselves.

Don't only look for the big breakthroughs.
Pay attention to the quiet ones too.

I don't think most women have a productivity problem.

I think we have a permission problem.

And it didn't start in adulthood.

It started much earlier when we quietly learned that our value comes from what we do, rather than simply from who we are.

So we started earning our place.
Earning approval.
Earning love.
Earning rest.

Until eventually... we forgot those things were never ours to earn in the first place. ๐Ÿฆ‹

Our nervous system always chooses what's familiar even when what's familiar is exhausting.

You were never meant to earn your rest.

Very few women ever tell me they're good at resting.

What they tell me instead is...

"I feel guilty when I rest."
"I just feel like I should be doing something."
"I'll sit down once this is finished."
"Just need to get through this week."

But somehow this week turns into next week.
Then next month.
Then next year.

And before you know it, you've spent years waiting for a moment that never arrives. ๐Ÿ’›

What if we've been thinking about rest all wrong?

Rest isn't something you earn.
It isn't something that comes after the list is finished.

Because that list? It's never finished.

Here's what nobody talks about.

It's lonely.

Sitting at the kitchen table after everyone's gone to bed. Completely spent. Scrolling, not because you even want to but because you're trying to reclaim just ten minutes that belong to you.

When you're the strong one, people stop checking if you're okay. They assume you'll manage. They assume you'll ask if you need help.

Except you never do, do you?

Because somewhere along the way, you became so used to being the helper... you forgot what it feels like to be helped.

You are not alone in this.

There was a moment in this conversation that really stopped me.

After returning from Vietnam, Keith's role wasn't over.

His job became notifying families that their son, husband or father had been wounded or killed in action. Then standing beside them as part of the honour guard.

He told me that, in many ways, that was harder than combat itself.

Not long afterwards, he received another phone call. His own mother was dying. Sometimes it's not one traumatic event that breaks us.

It's the accumulation.

The grief we never had time to process.
The responsibilities we keep carrying.
The losses that arrive before we've recovered from the last ones.

Eventually, even the strongest nervous system reaches its limit.

Healing isn't about pretending those experiences didn't happen. It's about finally giving yourself permission to acknowledge what you've carried for so long.

I'd love to know...

Have you ever realised it wasn't one event that exhausted you but the weight of everything added together?

We often think strength means holding it all together.

Keeping going.

Not complaining.
Not asking for help.
Carrying the weight quietly.

But what if that's actually the very thing that's keeping us stuck?

This week on Growing Tall Poppies, I sit down with US Marine Vietnam combat veteran, author and speaker Keith A. Cole, whose story is one of extraordinary resilience, heartbreaking loss, burnout, and ultimately, hope.

Wounded three times during the Vietnam War, Keith spent decades pushing through, building a successful career and carrying responsibilities that most people could never imagine. Like so many high-functioning people, he believed he simply had to be strong.

Until one night, everything caught up with him.

What followed wasn't just recovery from burnout; it was a complete re-evaluation of what real strength actually looks like.

One of the moments that stayed with me most was when Keith said:
"It doesn't take strength to suffer. It takes strength to ask for help."

Whether you've experienced trauma, burnout, compassion fatigue, chronic stress, or simply spent years carrying everyone else's needs before your own, I hope this conversation reminds you of one important truth:

You were never meant to carry it all alone.
