I was about 10 in this photo. Stilt walking outside our family hotel.
My grandad had made me those stilts from bits of old timber, and I thought they were the best thing in the world.
There wasn’t much in the way of school holiday entertainment where I grew up. No cinemas. No bowling. Just the hills, the sea and the kind of quiet that makes you invent your own fun.
So we did.
But those stilts?
They had me. I was absolutely determined to learn.
It took me five solid days to stop falling. I’d get back up, graze my knees, and try again.

Eventually, I was gliding up and down the main street, like I was 10 feet tall.
I still remember the tourists snapping photos of me like I was some local attraction, hired entertainment, ha! I’d grin and play it up for the camera, secretly proud I hadn’t fallen in front of them.
