Portland remains at the centre of Victoria’s H5 bird flu response, with authorities expecting case numbers to rise as they investigate 33 additional suspected infections and warn the virus may be spreading beyond greater crested terns

The additional suspected cases, reported on Wednesday 5 August, include 30 greater crested terns, one silver gull, one inconclusive magpie and one unidentified bird.

They are in addition to the seven confirmed H5N1 cases already detected in Victoria, while surveillance has also identified clusters of sick and dead birds at the internationally significant Point Danger and Lawrence Rocks gannet colony south of Portland.

The old saying goes that if you choose a job you love, you never have to work a day in your life – and that aptly sums up Ros Nagorcka’s career in nursing.
When the Observer sat down with Ms Nagorcka for a chat on Friday 31 July, it marked exactly 50 years since her journey began.
“If I had my time over I would go nursing again, it is the best job in the world,” she told the Observer.
