Sketch Group

Sketch Group We use sketching to tell stories, solve problems, explain ideas, and capture conversations. We sketch stuff. We're pretty good at it!

For example:
* we create hand-drawn videos that make dry or complex information fun or easy to understand
* we live sketch your conference or event
* we capture your ideas and turn them into a powerful one-page sketch
* we run training sessions to teach you how to sketch like a pro

Struggling to get your team truly aligned? It’s not just about the message—it’s about the image.

In our recent article, we explore how visual metaphors unlock clarity and drive shared understanding. For education leaders, local government professionals and change communicators, this means:
✅ A single image that encapsulates your vision—no more mixed messages.
✅ Simplified complexity—turn policy, strategy or reform into something everyone ‘gets’.
✅ Increased engagement—when people see it, they feel it.

Read on to learn how you can harness visuals to make your next workshop, strategy session or team meeting more than just conversation.

What an incredible two days we had at the Engagement Institute Annual Conference 2025!

We had so much fun meeting everyone, having great chats, and bringing the conversations to life through our live digital graphic recording of keynotes and breakout sessions.

Our IdeaSketch™ was a hit too, with attendees sharing their answers to: “If you had a magic wand, what’s the ONE thing you’d change about community engagement?”

It’s always inspiring to see how visuals bring people together - sparking collaboration, encouraging engagement, and ensuring every idea is seen, heard, and explored collectively.

Big thank you to the Engagement Institute team for having us at the event!

The Australian Social Cohesion Summit 2025 brought together a community to explore what it means to live, work, and belong together.

We were thrilled to be part of the day — graphic recording the inspiring discussions and hosting our interactive IdeaSketch™, where we asked attendees: “What does Social Cohesion mean to you?”

The responses were incredible — so many heartfelt, insightful, and hopeful messages about connection, belonging, and community.

A huge thank you to the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute for letting us be part of this important event.

We were delighted to be a part of the 2025 IABC Victoria Deb Ganderton Oration and bring the conversations to life through live graphic recording.

Sally Capp AO, former Lord Mayor of Melbourne, delivered an inspiring address on the role of authentic communication during her two terms as Lord Mayor— followed by an engaging panel with Rebecca Skelton, Ben Hart, and Stephanie Waters.

A big thank you to IABC Victoria for the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful event celebrating excellence in communication.

Welcome to Part 2 of our 'Meet the Artist' Series!

Originally trained as an architect, Lucinda Gifford Books also has a background in communications, advertising and design. She now works as an illustrator, facilitator and graphic recorder and spends much of her time drawing in front of groups. As a graphic recorder, Lucinda has a particular interest in early and primary education, public services, Aboriginal health, health systems and project co-design. Her style is best described as succinct and lively and (where appropriate) humorous.

Lucinda is also an award-winning childrens author and illustrator. When NOT graphic recording or designing communications, she is to be found happily drawing cats, dogs, wolves and dragons in her studio in Melbourne.

Lucinda is particularly proud of the award-winning Defining Moments in History explainer video created with Sketch Group and the National Library of Australia.

She also very much enjoys creating narratives with groups of children (and sneakily educating them on creative and critical thinking).

When you bring a graphic recorder into the room, you’re doing more than hiring someone to draw—you’re giving your audience a way to see their ideas come to life.

But here’s the catch: even the most talented graphic recorder can’t do their best work without the right conditions. Event organisers often don’t realise how much influence they have on the outcome.

In our latest article, we explore 5 simple but powerful ways organisers can help their graphic recorder on the day.

We're delighted to be a part of the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute's Australian Social Cohesion Summit 2025 this Thursday. Leaders, change makers, and community voices will come together to explore how we can build stronger, more inclusive communities across Australia.

Throughout the day, our team will be LiveSketching the discussions and conversations in real time, turning key ideas and insights into visuals that everyone can connect with. In addition, we're excited to host IdeaSketch — a collaborative space where participants can visually brainstorm and co-create solutions around a common theme.

We’re looking forward to contributing to a day of meaningful dialogue, creative collaboration, and shared ideas that help shape a more cohesive community.

When words alone aren’t enough, visuals can do the heavy lifting.

We’re excited to kick off our new ‘Meet the Artist’ series, where our illustrators share a glimpse into their world—what inspires them, their unique art style, and the journey that led them to a career in illustration.

First up is Andy.

”For as long as I can remember, I have found comfort in drawing the weird, the wonderful, the fantastical. When other kids were learning their multiplication tables I was creating flip animations on the pages of my textbooks. Inspired by comic artists like Bill Watterson, children's books illustrators like Maurice Sendak and authors like JRR Tolkien, I have delighted in filling sketchbook after sketchbook with crazy creatures and magical worlds. Drawn to fine lines and details, my work is often completed in pen and ink with splashes of watercolour. And now I'm equally comfortable working in the digital realm and excited by the possibilities it offers.”
