I've just wrapped up my third year of remote live streaming the Australian of the Year awards from each capital city around the country. 8 shows, 16 nominees per show. That's 128 amazing Australians doing inspirational work with their communities.
Originally I was supposed to fly around and do this gig in person in 2020, but we all know how that year panned out. And thanks to COVID, no flights and lockdowns, I had to come up with a way to direct and produce the shows remotely. By using local camera crews in each city and a system* that allowed us to affordably get multiple, high quality video feeds between cities within half a second, this remote control live show was born.
*If you want the full nerdy rundown, DM me.
It's been an amazing 3 years of work which I've learnt a lot from and am really proud of, with the program streaming live to YouTube, the Australian of the Year website, ACM news websites and ABC iView.
None of this would of been possible without the amazing team at Broken Yellow who produce the show. Navid Bahadori, Mario Lendvai, Elena Arena and Grace Pestonji - Thank you for your support, comradery and belief in me. It has made this gig very rewarding to be on. Now you all need to get some sleep.
Thanks to all the crews I've worked with around the country. Felix Baker (NT), Mitch Gray (NSW), Andrew Walton (Tas), Sam O'Reilly (Vic), Paul Simpson (ACT), Chris Murch (SA), Kris Myhre (WA), David Pawsey (QLD), and please share this thanks with your teams. Thanks for being on the other end of the phone during the show, providing great vision and listening to my bad jokes and complaints about camera colour science and shaky risers.
Thanks to all the venue staff that set up the mics, run the lights and help put on the show.
Thanks to Tom Sillence and the team at Red Bee Media for all their real time captioning and efforts to get the live captions working with both youtube AND iView.
Thanks to Marie Davies and Naveen Umakanth from the ABC for helping us get the show onto iView and providing us with sound engineers for all the venues.
Thanks to all the team at the Australia Day Council. Great working with you all.
Thanks to vMix, an Australian made piece of software, that tames all the video flying around the internet and helps turn it into a show. Impressive stuff.
And thanks to my family for putting up with me working late, swearing at technology, piling cables around the house and for disappearing at dinner time to go put this show to air during October and November these last three years. xo
