While each Karnivool album has been a departure from its predecessor, this time around they seem to be refining their sound and synthesising key components of their back catalogue.

The Perth band’s current focus appears to be on hypnotic grooves, textured guitar work and dynamic structures that surge and swell, all underpinning Ian Kenny’s penchant for anthemic and meaning-soaked vocal lines. This was all on display at the band's Ad Complementum tour date in Melbourne/Naarm.

“There’s no rules / Be yourself,” sang Dick Diver's Al Montfort in the band’s emancipation anthem, “Head Back,” to the delight of a full house Thornbury Theatre. “Burn the flag.”

It was one of many highlights at band's first show in seven years, which was effectively the inner north equivalent of the Oasis reunion.

August is upon us and there are stacks of artists touring Australia.

There’ll be bumper headline tours from Bloc Party and Tyler, The Creator, an absolutely ridiculous number of shows for The Used, and a couple of arena dates for Camila Cabello.

On the local front, Wet Kiss are touring behind their new album Thus Spoke the Broken Chanteuse, Northlane are hitting the regions, CLAMM are taking their new LP Serious Acts on tour, and Keith Urban is playing arenas up and down the east coast.

CLAMM's new album Serious Acts represents a subtle but significant evolution in the band’s sound.

The Melbourne/Naarm punk band voice their anger at the state of the world. But singer Jack Summers is unsure whether CLAMM are a political band.

"In a way, I don’t really care about politics because it’s stupid – the political system, I mean, and the system in which we live," Summers told Check Check. "I don’t agree with it, and politics is a part of that. It’s inherently stupid. But then obviously, my interest is in the human experience and how we exist. And, well, we exist within that system."

“Just tell me you adore me,” sings Emily Wurramara on her new single 'Adore Me,' her voice betraying a mixture of sober expectation and creeping impatience.

"It’s so important to tell people how you feel because, either way, it’s doing damage, whether to yourself or to the other party," Wurramara told Check Check.

Music In Exile's main objective is to support musicians with lived experience of migration or displacement who are living and making music in Australia.

“A lot of the artists we work with might be performing or composing in a pretty specific genre or style and a language other than English,” said founder Joe Alexander. "The first thing we do is sit down with an artist and figure out what they want to achieve and how Music In Exile can best support that."

Music In Exile has just released its fifth birthday compilation, Music is Everything, featuring music by Chinese guzheng player Mindy Meng Wang 王萌 and Chinese-Malaysian Australian electronic musician Sui Zhen, Iranian-born santur player Maryam Rahmani, Guinea via Naarm sextet Jarabi Band, Ethiopian songwriter Muluu Baqqalaa, and more.
