📍The Edge of the World, Arthur River📍

To explore the West Coast, we camped at Tall Timbers in Smithton and took the Tarkine Coastal drive to Arthur River.

Here, we stood at the Edge of the World 😍 Called this as it’s the starting point of the longest uninterrupted stretch of ocean in the world - the closest piece of land in a straight being Argentina, 15,000 kms away!

Located near the mouth of the Arthur River, this part of Tassie is known as the Wild West and it truely felt like it!
Wild winds, roaring ocean, rugged coast line and massive piles of driftwood were a powerful and awesome sight to be seen.

Well worth the trip out❤️

📍Strahan📍

One of the wettest regions in Australia, Strahan, has an average of only 15 clear days per year!

So we weren’t surprised when we didn’t get one of them for our 2 day stay 🤣

We had a great day doing the iconic Gordon River cruise. A 6 hour tour to see Hells Gates (the smallest, roughest harbour entrance), learn about the history of Tassie’s oldest and most remote convict settlement at Sarah Island, including a walk through the rainforest at Heritage Landing😍

Of course we also had to catch The Ship That Never Was, Australia’s longest-running play.

A funny, interactive play, telling the dramatic story of convicts who stole a ship from Sarah Island in 1834 to escape to Chile 🤣

It’s a must-see experience that perfectly captures Tassie’s rich history and spirit. TIP: Buy tickets in advance on online, as it often sells out.

We didn’t do the West Coast Wilderness steam train ride - which we have heard is lovely…. Maybe next time.

📍Cockle Creek📍

2 hrs south of Hobart at the end of a 20k dirt road, lies Cockle Creek, the southern most point of Australia which you can drive to.

🏕️We spent the night in the free camp next to the pristine beach 😍
And checked out the huge bronze whale, a tribute to the early pioneers and its whaling history 🐳

We were really looking forward to this place as we had heard great things about it.

We arrived on a beautiful afternoon, and Dane managed a swim on the freezing cold water 💦

But, the weather turned - so we changed our plans and moved on the next day🌧️⛈️

📍Hastings Caves📍

90 mins from Hobart in Southern Huon Valley, this Dolomite cave is spectacular 😍

Only discovered in 1917, it extends for 3K! But on 300m are open to the public 😅

It was really cold down there, but the bonus when you get out, is a beautiful natural thermal spring pool and a lovely hot shower 💦😍

📍Hobart 📍

What a great place 😍 we camped in Snug and explored the Hobart area from there.

Highlights for us were:

⭐️ Salamanca markets - great food and cakes 😍

⭐️ Mount Wellington and Pinnacle lookout walk - we only managed a small peek through the clouds 🤣

⭐️ MONA - was awesome arriving by boat 😍

⭐️ The New Sydney Hotel - the best Irish pub, with great Guinness and live Irish diddly diddly music ☘️

⭐️ We even managed to get a glimpse of of the southern aurora 😍

📍Bruny Island📍

Such a pretty island with stunning beaches and delicious locally sourced and made food.

We had amazing bread, cheese, preserves, wine, pizza and chocolate 😋

The highlight for me was the amazing views of the pristine beaches from The Neck❤️

- The Neck Lookout is one of the most well known spots to visit, with panoramic views on the sea divided by a thin strip of land.

And of course - a visit to he iconic bread fridge is a must - not just for the quirky photo - the sourdough and fruit bread are truly scrumptious:

HOT TIP:
Arrive early - the do sell out, and make sure you take some butter with you and have a slice while its still warm - yummy 😍

What a little gem ❤️

This beautiful historic village, known for its 1836 convict-built sandstone bridge, Georgian architecture, and iconic bakery is a must do for any Tassie itinerary 🥰

So pretty and so much to see. Highlights for us were:

⭐️ the amazing windmill- where we camped for FREE - beautiful at sunrise, by day and spectacularly lit up at night.

⭐️ The female factory, a historic female convict prison site - with its emotional stories.

⭐️ The beautiful convict built bridge.

⭐️The iconic bakery and its delicious scallop pies.

⭐️So many trees shaped into sheep, cats, horses etc

HOT TIP:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️If you love your chilli - go and visit Rob at the award winning Australia Extreme Chilli Condiments - just delicious, we stocked up big time here 😍

📍Stanley 📍

What a stunning little fishing village❤️

The Nut with its challenging zig zag walk, the chairlift, the views, great scallop pie’s and of course the penguins 🐧

⛺️We camped at the rec ground - ocean front and just 10 cash PN💰

TIPS

🐧 An approximate penguin arrival time is posted on the gate to the board walk, near the church.

🔦 use red light torches to protect the penguin’s eyes.

🚗 be careful as they come on to the roads and carpark.

🪦 check out the grave yard as you leave - it’s full of penguin nests and there are penguins everywhere.

💨Stanley is well known for strong winds, so check the weather - we had a perfect 1st day, followed by a force 9 gale the next 🤣

We couldn’t wait to check out this beautiful coastal town - with the cutest name EVER😍

The town is so cute and really lives up to its name, with a nod to penguins everywhere - even on the traffic bollards 🤣

And with lovely coffee shops, bars and restaurants- it really is with a stop.

We free camped just outside town at Sulphur creek and had beautiful ocean views 😍

BUT the best thing - of course - was seeing the locals come ashore in the evening - beautiful penguins of course 😍🐧🐧
