This incredible 1974 snapshot captures a bustling day in Queanbeyan’s CBD, with locals lining Monaro Street outside West End Discount Store, Paulmart Discount, Jason Reid, the Waratah Cafe and the local butcher.

For many locals, downtown Queanbeyan wasn’t just a place to shop – it was where you caught up with neighbours, grabbed a milkshake, did the weekly shopping and spent a Saturday morning in town.

More than 50 years later, Monaro Street is changing, while the shopfronts and businesses may have changed, the street remains the heart of Queanbeyan and a place where our community comes together.

Do you remember any of these businesses? We’d love to hear your memories in the comments.

There are few things guaranteed to send a parent into panic mode faster than a child with a fever. It’s 2am, they’re burning up, Google is telling you 17 different things and you’re standing in the kitchen in your pyjamas wondering whether to reach for the Panadol or the car keys. For Queanbey...

Monaro Street Upgrade Update 🚧✨

Despite the wet weather, progress has continued with the garden bed and median infrastructure beginning to take shape near the bridge end of Monaro Street and concrete finishing works continuing throughout the area.

Work has also commenced on new footpath connections to the existing stormwater network.

Investigation works recently undertaken at the Lowe Street intersection have provided important information about existing stormwater infrastructure, helping the project team assess options to minimise timeframes for future works.

Looking ahead to next week, crews will continue work on the new median infrastructure, kerb and gutter installation, as well as ongoing drainage and pavement works across the site.

Big things are starting to take shape in the Monaro Street Upgrade. The project is now moving from major earthworks and underground services into the more visible reconstruction phase, with concrete surface works beginning on new median walls, kerbs and the final road formation. Over the coming week, crews will continue installing pavement drainage and road edge infrastructure, along with additional service works and kerb construction. There are no changes to current traffic controls, pedestrian access or fencing arrangements, and construction traffic will remain similar to recent weeks. Don’t forget to continue to support our Monaro Street businesses! 🚧🏗️✨
