This incredible 1974 snapshot captures a bustling day in Queanbeyan’s CBD, with locals lining Monaro Street outside West End Discount Store, Paulmart Discount, Jason Reid, the Waratah Cafe and the local butcher.
For many locals, downtown Queanbeyan wasn’t just a place to shop – it was where you caught up with neighbours, grabbed a milkshake, did the weekly shopping and spent a Saturday morning in town.
More than 50 years later, Monaro Street is changing, while the shopfronts and businesses may have changed, the street remains the heart of Queanbeyan and a place where our community comes together.
Do you remember any of these businesses? We’d love to hear your memories in the comments.
