The Community Helper with Rhodes Watson

My first 12 months of learning to drive must have been terrifying for my parents and adults around me.

I turned 17 on a Saturday. I was desperate to get my learner permit and I pleaded with Mum to drive me to the Emu Park police station. It was 7.30am.

I knocked on the door of the police house and the local Sergeant opened the door in his flannelette pyjamas.

He was quite a big man, and I do remember the size of his boots because they had connected with my backside a few times in the past.

β€œWhat do you want, Watson?” He said in his policeman’s voice.
β€œI’d like my learner permit.”

In my left hand, I had $6.50 and in my right hand had six pack of beer....
