FIRST NATIONS MEDIA UNITES IN DARWIN FOR CONVERGE 2025

BY ASAD KHAN AND TANGIORA HINAKI

The First Nations media sector has wrapped up its annual national gathering, CONVERGE 2025, held on Larrakia Country in Darwin from 29 to 31 July.

Organised by First Nations Media Australia, the three-day conference brought together broadcasters, journalists, media workers, and community leaders from across the country under the theme Meeting Together >> Moving in One Direction.

CONVERGE highlighted the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media organisations as a vital force in cultural preservation, community empowerment, and amplifying Indigenous voices. It also served as a forum for sector-wide updates and policy discussion.

On Thursday morning, Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy, Minister for Indigenous Australians, addressed delegates and acknowledged recent tragedies in the Northern Territory.

In the presence of Ned Hargraves, a senior Warlpiri Elder and grandfather of Kumjayi White, the Minister reflected on White’s death while under police restraint in an Alice Springs supermarket.

During an open Q&A session, broadcaster and musician Grant Hansen questioned Senator McCarthy on funding allocations from the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA).

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INVESTS $3 MILLION IN DEMENTIA RESEARCH FOR FIRST NATIONS COMMUNITIES

BY ASAD KHAN

The Australian Government has announced a $3 million investment to improve dementia outcomes for First Nations people through a new international research initiative in partnership with Canada.

The Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care and Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health, Rebecca White, said the project would help address the alarmingly high rates of dementia among First Nations Australians, which are three to five times higher than the general population.

“We need to make sure we can better understand how we diagnose and treat people living with dementia,”

“This investment of $3 million will allow us to do further research so we can better understand the impact of dementia on First Nations people, particularly here in Australia.”

She emphasised the importance of drawing on international Indigenous knowledge systems to inform a culturally grounded and collaborative approach.

“There are First Nations communities in Canada who we are working alongside… to understand how we can have an Indigenous-led, culturally appropriate approach to research,” she said.

ALLERY SANDY TAKES PILBARA ART TO LONDON FOR RIO TINTO EXHIBITION

Yindjibarndi artist Allery Sandy has been in London for one week as the signature artist for the 25th anniversary of Rio Tinto’s Colours of our Country exhibition.

Allery is sharing her story and artwork with international audiences, marking a significant moment for Pilbara Aboriginal art on the global stage. While in the UK, she also visited the Tate Modern to see the Emily Kam Kngwarray exhibition – a rare and powerful celebration of First Nations art in Britain.

The trip has included some classic London moments, from riding a double-decker bus and visiting Buckingham Palace, to enjoying a traditional high tea and catching a black cab.

The journey has been made possible thanks to Rio Tinto, Wrapped Creations, and Allery’s close-knit support team, including fellow artist Lynette Upton and her grandson Max Coppin.

Known for her cultural leadership, wisdom and grace, Allery continues to represent her community and the Yindjibarndi nation with pride and strength.

UWA RESEARCHER DOCUMENTS HOW MOB USE ENGLISH IN THE PILBARA

By Renata Kelly and Latisha Kadibil

Katharina Froedrich, a PhD student in linguistics from Munich now based at the University of Western Australia, is researching how Indigenous communities in the Pilbara region speak English. Partnering with the PKKP Aboriginal Corporation in Karratha, she studies how English use varies across towns, reflects identity, and shifts depending on the speaker. Her respectful, relationship-focused approach includes listening and learning from the community. Froedrich highlights that Aboriginal English is not “broken” but a distinct, structured variety. Her recordings of everyday conversations aim to support both academic research and cultural preservation. The Australian Government and the Forrest Research Foundation fund her.
