Bulbophyllum cootesii, Philippinies – from David P. Banks’ ORCHID SPECIES OF THE WORLD.

“ Endemic to the island of Mindanao, it has a short inflorescence of up to four 70mm-tall blooms. The flowers are honey coloured, often overlaid with fine brown stripes. The labellum is white at its base, with the distal half bright red to bronze. Intermediate to warm conditions.”

Orchid Species of the World is an epic illustrated encyclopedia of global wild native orchids from the Old and New Worlds, including temperate and tropical areas and both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This is the most complete, comprehensive and up-to-date illustrated guide ever published on these cosmopolitan, specialised and iconic flowering plants, and it is presented in a single colourful, authoritative and information-packed volume.

Never before has such a variety and quantity of terrestrial, lithophytic and epiphytic orchids been presented together. Introductory chapters cover the basics about orchids and their biology, naming and cultivation. This is followed by a summary of the characters defining the 343 different genera featured, with succinct and precise text about the 3,333 individually described and illustrated species entries. Details also include countries of origin, defining identification characters, cultivation tips and seasonal flowering times.

The most current botanical combinations have been included and applied on a case-by-case basis, keeping similar natural groups together, after the author has personally studied these orchids and reviewed the latest published taxonomic proposals and DNA-based scientific research, with more than 2,450 synonyms and alternate names included.

Young Little Grebes, (Tachybaptus ruficollis), hitching a lift on an adult – from the new edition of Peter Barry’s BIRDS: WHAT’S IN A NAME.

Little Grebe

“The species name comes from two Latin words: Rufus means ‘red’, and collum means ‘collar’. Taking into account the genus name (see above), the Little Grebe’s scientific name translates literally as ‘red‑collared fast-sinker’! The bird’s range extends across much of Europe, Africa and Asia. It is an excellent swimmer, and nests close to the water’s edge, since the legs are set far back on the body, making it difficult to walk. The young leave the nest and can swim soon after hatching, and are often given a piggyback by the parents.”

This entertaining and informative guide explains the meanings of bird names, many of which have fascinating origins and stories behind them. The universal system of ‘scientific’ names, based largely on Greek and Latin, is used in all good bird books and assists birdwatchers around the world in figuring out exactly what they are looking at. While some of the names are fairly self-explanatory – such as Troglodytes for wren, meaning ‘cave-dweller’ – others are more mysterious – Caprimulgus for nightjar, for example, meaning ‘goat-sucker’.

The updated and extended Second Edition covers hundreds of bird species from around the world. BIRDS: WHAT’S IN A NAME? includes explanations of hundreds of scientific names and common names, as well as delivering a wealth of other facts and trivia relating to the species concerned. In short, it’s the most readable and entertaining book on the subject available anywhere.

MOROCCAN: AUTHENTIC COOKING obviously focusses on producing delicious dishes that showcase this unique cuisine, however, the book also provides a fascinating insight into life and culture, including architecture, history and daily life.

“In Morocco the midday meal is the main meal, with the exception of the holy month of Ramadan. The typical formal meal begins with a series of hot and cold salads, followed by a tagine. Break is eaten with every meal. Often a lamb is cooked until so tender it can be pulled apart and eaten with the fingers. Chicken dishes normally follow red meat and then couscous topped with vegetables. A cup of sweet mint tea is next and is commonly used to end the meal.”

Moroccan food is one of the most sensual in the world. It appeals directly and unashamedly to the sense of smell, sight, and taste in a way no other cuisine can match. Indulge in what this cuisine has to offer with MOROCCAN: AUTHENTIC COOKING.
