The Sun – from EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SPACE by Steve Massey.

“The Sun is the brightest object in the sky. Like other stars, it is an enormous nuclear powerhouse with temperatures at its core reaching 15 million degrees Celsius. Yet the Sun is really a very average type of yellow star, roughly halfway through its life. Compared with the planets in our Solar System, the Sun is huge., with a diameter 109 times greater than Earth’s and enough energy to keep burning for another five billion years.”

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SPACE answers all the essential questions on the topics for young readers.

Also in the series: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CURRENCY, EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FLAGS and EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DINOSAURS

“A couple of weeks prior to Bout 15 – 4 September 1975 – I did a photo shoot, and this was the first time I made the cover of ‘Fighter Magazine’. That’s me on the left, Gus Mercurio in the middle and the mysterious Glen Howard on the right. I can’t remember where the swimming pool was, but it’s got that green look of Springtime.” from Barry Michael’s new autobiography THE LAST MAN STANDING.

This is Barry Michael’s “tell as much as I can without getting sued” autobiography, in which the former world champion lets us in and give us an insider’s look into the reality of the pro-fighter's world – from the day-to-day grind of training, to the way the sport is organised and run, to what actually goes on in the mind of a fighter before, during and after each fight – and all the moments in between.

Pumpkins – from GROWING YOUR OWN FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

“Pumpkins grow on trailing vines and are very easy to grow. They do, however, take up a lot of space. Vines can be trained over fences or pagodas, clotheslines, paths or sheds provided they can support the weight of the fruit. Some of the bushier varieties like Golden Nugget can be grown in containers, but most are too vigorous. Pumpkins need full sun and well-drained soil. They can be grown as one of the ‘three sisters’ (corn, beans, pumpkins) in a patch where they wind their way around corn stalks, acting as a groundcover to shade the corn’s shallow roots, while the corn acts as a trellis for beans, which, in turn, fix nitrogen into the soil to nourish the corn and pumpkins.”

GROWING YOUR OWN FRUIT AND VEGETABLES guides you through the process of creating and nurturing your fruit and vegetable garden. With a little preparation and enthusiasm even the beginner gardener will be able to harvest produce from their own plot in no time.

Drawing on her knowledge inherited from three generations of gardeners, Alison Chivers has created an easy-to-use guide, accompanied by photographs from Mary Canning of inspiring gardens from around the country, complete with a calendar of what to sow when.

Golden Donkey Orchid (Diuris aurea) - from one of the new titles in the ever-growing Reed Concise Guide series, ORCHIDS by David L. Jones.

“Handsome orchid with large golden/orange flowers lightly marked with brown. The large paddle-shaped petals project upwards like ears and the jutting labellum has a large central lobe folded down the middle with two broad spreading side lobes.”

Following an introduction that gives an overview of the subject, the bulk of this book features 195 species accounts of Australian native orchids, including both epiphytes and terrestrial species.

Many have evocative names, such as King-in-his-carriage and Spotted Sun Orchid, to match their spectacular blooms. All the most common and widespread species are included, while care has been taken to include representatives from all genera and families present in Australia. The coverage also extends to a range of rarer species.

For each species there is at least one photograph showing the orchid and a brief written account listing key ID features for leaves and flowers, size, habit, habitat, range and flowering period. The easy-to-use layouts and small size make the book ideal for taking on days out or walks in the bush. It is perfect for beginners or nature-lovers of an intermediate level, and also for children as a first book on Australian orchids.

Here’s some more ways flags are used other than to represent nations and states – from the new Young Reed book, EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FLAGS.

TRADE ORGANISATION
Some organisations promote trade and cooperation throughout the world.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations promotes trade in Southeast Asia. Its blue flag represents friendship and the 10 rice stalks in the emblem represent the 10 member nations.

The European Union promotes trade in Europe. Its flag has a circle of 12 gold stars on a blue field. The 12 stars represent unity among the peoples of Europe. The Commonwealth of Nations represents nations that are still ruled by Britain. Its flag has a dark blue field with a globe but no countries depicted. The gold lines around the globe form the letter C.

WORLD PEACE
The United Nations was established after World War II to maintain international peace. Its flag shows a blue field under a simplified map of the world. This map was chosen because no particular nation is emphasised. The map is flanked by two olive branches, which symbolise world peace.

Blue and white are the colours of the UN. The flag has been adapted by related agencies such as UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) and WHO (World Health Organization).

The World Organisation of the Scout Movement supports young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development. The scouting world flag has a fleur-de-lis flower to show scouts they should be moving forward. The two stars Flag of The Commonwealth of Nations symbolise truth and knowledge. The encircling rope is a reminder of the unity of all WOSM members.

“The main Moroccan dish most people are familiar with is couscous (granular semolina), an old delicacy probably of Berber origin. It is often cooked with spices, vegetables, nuts and raisins. It makes a meal in itself or is topped with rich stew and roasted meats to make a more complete meal”

MOROCCAN: AUTHENTIC COOKING is more than just a cookbook, it is an insight into Moroccan culture.

Before you delve into the vast array of recipes, learn about Moroccan etiquette, architecture, history and cooking ingredients.

Moroccan cuisine is very diverse, with many influences. The reason for this is a mix of Arab, Berber, Moorish, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, African and other influences.

The cooks in the royal kitchens of Fes, Meknes, Marrakech, Rabat and Tetouan refined their best over the centuries and created the basis for what is known as Moroccan cuisine today.

Delve into this cuisine with MOROCCAN: AUTHENTIC COOKING.

Although swans are found in many parts of the world, the black swan is unique to Australia and no series of books on Australian wildlife would be complete without the story of this interesting and beautiful water-bird.

Koonaworra is a male cygnet, hatched from a pale green egg among the rushes of a lake in the heart of Australia’s wheat country. Indepen dence comes early to a young black swan and it is only a matter of weeks before Koonaworra is fending for himself in the swan colony. His naturally strong and rather quarrelsome person ality is an asset to him as he begins to mature for the fight for survival is far from easy.

As young readers follow Koonaworra’s many exploits, they will learn a great deal of the life and habits of these remarkable birds. Beauti fully illustrated by Margaret Senior, Koonaworra the Black Swan is yet another exciting and authentic story from one of Australia’s most popular children’s authors.
