Tonight on Assignation Jazz and Blues - 9pm - a tribute to the late Wayne Shorter, one of the great jazz saxophone players... should be mentioned in the same breath as John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young - what an outstanding career. On Assignation Jazz and Blues tonight at 9pm - PBA-FM 89.7 in Adelaide's northern suburbs, back to 1959 - several important jazz albums produced that year - Miles Davis "Kinda Blue", Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" and John Coltrane's "Giant Steps"! Duke Ellington released music from the movie "Anatomy of A Murder", plus some jazz vocals from Ella, Carmen McRae and Jimmy Rushing, all from 1959. And then Part 4 of an early jazz history of Victoria.

On Assignation Jazz and Blues tonight 9pm Adelaide time, - received CDs from Michelle Nicolle, playing a couple of tracks, James Morrison, Claire Martin and Barb Jungr from England, Stevenson's Rockets, Andrea Marr blues. Then it's Part 2 of an Early History of Jazz in Victoria which I made for the Community Radio Network about 10 years ago, and brought out of mothballs last week!!

Some greats of jazz and blues on the program tonight - 9pm Adelaide time. Featuring pairings on albums - eg Bags and Wes (Milt Jackson on vibes and Wes Montgomery on guitar), Janet Seidel with harmonica player William Galison, Graeme Bell Jazz Band with American ex Ellington band trumpeter Rex Stewart, BB King with Diane Schurr (a bit of gospel), Kate Ceberano with American trumpet player Mark Isham. Bill Evans and Chet Baker - I didn't know they had recorded together. Looking forward to hearing some great jazz and blues tonight.

Hi Jazz n Blues Fans, I've been away for two weeks jazzing it up at Wangaratta Festival of Jazz n Blues, plus seeing a Louis Jordan tribute at the Jazzlab in Melbourne, plus seeing James Morrison at Hamer Hall. So tonight I'll be re-creating some of that vibe. Some Louis Jordan, Michelle Nicole, an Adelaide youth band "Soylent Green" from their self-titled album, James Morrison, Dan Barnett, clarinet player Jon Hunt and some great blues! I happened into Basement Discs, in the Block arcade in Melbourne, just when Fenn Wilson (son of the late great bluesman Chris Wilson) was launching his new CD so I grabbed a copy. 9.00pm Adelaide time tonight - listen in for a program featuring jazz drummers - some of the best, Gene Krupa, Art Blakey, Joe Morello, some going back a way, some more contemporary. And a few backing some great singers. And I'll include some of the Aussie drumming legends, Len Barnard, John Morrison, Adelaide legend Billy Ross, and Adelaide young gun Angus Mason. One of my favourites is Tony Williams, a hard-driving drummer who pushed the tempo along - backing Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock live in Europe. Sonny Rollins, amazing tenor sax player, turned 92 yesterday, so a few from him, Mark Isham, trumpet player from the US, turned 71 yesterday and I have an album he did with our own Kate Ceberano, so two tracks from the album "Bittersweet". South Coast Jazz Festival in Goolwa is coming up soon, mid-October, so two songs from headline act Pippa Wilson from Melbourne. Plus Don Burrows (Tin Roof Blues - a song from 1923!!), blues from Geoff Atchison, Pugsley Buzzard, Simon Kinney-Lewis and much more. On Assignation Jazz n Blues tonight at 9pm (SA time) - a tribute to trumpeter Charlie Shavers, who would have had a birthday yesterday (tunes taken from Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts). Also, yesterday was Tony Bennett's 96th birthday so a couple of tunes from the master crooner. I've been in isolation for Covid reasons (not covert reasons :-) ), so no show last week. Sorry.
There's a big Celebration of Swing concert at Her Majesty's Theatre in Adelaide on Friday 5th August at 7.30pm, so tomorrow night's Assignation Jazz and Blues program is devoted to swing music (Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman etc) but with some Aussie musicians covering some of the songs and featuring Swing City Band and James Morrison amongst others.
You'll also hear an interview with the show's Music Director, John Morrison, which I recorded last Saturday.
