Slowly losing it, but baby tarantula helps. My trip to Ecuador is currently wrapping up and I’m so grateful for all the wacky wildlife I’ve been able to encounter and work with! If you would have told younger Zach he’d be nursing a baby monkey and wrangling a lance head viper he’d be ecstatic. I leave for a bit, then come back in November to continue to help the rescue center grow and develop!

There’s a remarkable diversity of insects down here in Ecuador, with 4,000 species of butterflies alone! Click beetles might be my favorite insects though, I remember being younger and watching them do their little flips in the garden.

Longhorn beetles consume sweet saps and the nectar of flowers, but very rarely do they indulge in poetry.
I love poems and sometimes I make up a good few when I’m out and about in the wilds. I never put most to paper and so the majority are lost forever, but who cares. We are a rhyming and sing-songy species, there’s no doubt about that. Why would I silence the humming mammal of my heart when he clearly has quite a bit to say?

A bullet ant sting was painful for me, so I can’t imagine how this cicada was feeling 😔🫡

Peanut headed lanternfly (Fulgora laternaria) my beloved, I finally gaze upon your large head. When I was about four years old, I thought this insect was a tick and that it had such a large head for slurping up blood. In reality, they use their large k***s to attract mates with vibrations created by smacking their heads against trees!

Malachite butterfly in the chud beard, whimsy in my heart, and so many bugs I could gnaw through my skin. I’m right where I need to be, I’m always right where I need to be 🥰

This cicada nymph hatched, showed the world its beautiful colors for a fleeting moment, and then was dragged down to the forest floor by this bullet ant and extinguished. It grew wings, only to have them clipped immediately. Such is life, the story of one is the story of all and none of us will be able to escape the scavengers.

Stories about a species of giant stick insect going undiscovered until recently in Australia seem a bit silly, until you realize that stick insects look like sticks! This makes them very hard to spot sometimes! Luckily, real sticks don’t eat, which made it very easy to distinguish this fella from the surrounding foliage!
