Tebrakunna Rd tragedy

Road to close - vigil to be held tonight

The bridge at the scene of a fatal crash on Tebrakunna Rd late last week is set to be replaced, with the gravel road to be temporarily closed to traffic next week.

The timing of the major road work announcement came a day before two bodies, believed to be that of missing tourists Leannedra Kang and Takahiro Toya, were located near a crashed vehicle at Great Musselroe River, about 10km east of Pioneer.

Inspector Luke Manhood said police located a car in water off Tebrakunna Road about 5.30pm on Friday, with the deceased pair found nearby a short time later.

“At this early stage it appears they were travelling over a bridge when the vehicle has left the roadway and ended up in the water,” he said.

“This is a tragic outcome, and our thoughts are with their families and loved ones.”

Sustainable Timber Tasmania General Manager, Land Management and Conservation, Suzette Weeding said STT was liaising with Tasmania Police as part of their investigation.

She confirmed that the bridge was one of two to be replaced by STT, along with one at Ti**le Creek.

Counsels Road and Tebrakunna Road will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic from June 16 (not July 16 as written in this week’s edition by mistake) for up to four weeks.

Ms Weeding said STT manages an extensive network of more than 10,000 kilometres of forestry roads across the Tasmania.

“While these roads are primarily established for the purpose of conducting forest operations, they also enable access for fire management, recreation, tourism, and a range of commercial activities,” they said.

Police said initial investigations suggest there are no suspicious circumstances, but further forensic examinations would take place and a report would be prepared for the Coroner.

Police issued a plea for help to locate the tourists, both aged in their 20s, after their family raised concerns when they failed to board a flight and return their rental car mid last week.

Dorset Councillor Vincent Teichmann, a Pioneer resident, expressed the community’s heartfelt sympathy and sorrow to the victim’s family and friends for their immeasurable loss.
“Our community is rattled and feels a sense of loss at their needless deaths - if only we could have been there for them in their time of need,” Cr Teichmann said.
The Pioneer community will hold a candlelight vigil and minute’s silence at the Pioneer Hall on Wednesday June 11 at 5 pm “to honour them and grieve, to support one another, and to reflect as a community standing together in love and solidarity”.
