🚛 The hidden win for drivers in the HVNL changes
In the rush to talk about the big increases in HVNL fines, we may have missed one of the most practical wins for drivers. Especially those who still use a paper work diary.

The updated Written Work Diary requirements remove some of the paperwork traps that have caught drivers out for years.
From the amended HVNL changes on the 1st of August 2026:

✅ marking the day of the week becomes optional
✅ marking standard hours becomes optional
✅ recording daily work and rest totals becomes optional
✅ drivers can continue using their current written work diary until it is completed
✅ EWDs are not being made compulsory — paper diaries remain valid

This is not a small thing.

For years, drivers have been exposed to fines for missing a tick box, not adding up totals, or making minor admin slips that had little to do with actual road safety.

These changes mean fines should no longer be dished out simply because a driver forgot to tick the day, forgot to tick standard hours, or did not add up daily work and rest totals once those requirements are removed.

That is a win for drivers and it did not happen by accident.
Industry fought hard during the HVNL review to make fatigue penalties more proportionate and to separate genuine safety risks from paperwork for paperwork’s sake.

Let’s be clear: this does not mean the diary no longer matters.
The record still must be honest. Drivers still need to record their work and rest properly. False diary entries, altered records, missing pages, or dishonest paperwork are still serious and the penalties for that conduct are going up.

But there is a big difference between a driver making a minor admin mistake and someone falsifying a record.

That is the point.

The amended HVNL is finally recognising that difference.

The NRFA will keep pushing for practical, fair and common-sense regulation that improves safety without punishing drivers for paperwork that does not make the road safer.

Paper diary users are not being left behind.

This is a genuine hidden benefit in the reform. If you have questions or want to know more, reach out to NRFA for support!

This is exactly the heavy handed bu****it that the industry faces daily. So much for reducing the Administrative Penalties. This is a disgrace.

Episode 146. Peter 'LIZARD' Williams
“The Call of the Wild” was all it took for Lizard Williams to make the trek to the middle of the country and try his hand at road trains. The script was on the side of one of Noel Buntine’s legendary Macks in a newspaper article Lizard was reading so he packed the family up in the late 70’s, turned his back on the Hume and headed inland to begin a 30 year love affair with some of the country’s biggest machines. This is a non-filtered talk about what it took to survive in the bush in one of our funniest and raw interviews to date. Brace yourselves.....................

PLEASE READ...............Hey everyone, it's Bruce here. We are coming up to six years since we launched Copy Southbound and we'll hit 150 interviews in that time. I've met some of the country's finest and have experienced every emotion possible while being blessed with the opportunity to record Australian trucking history. I've never taken a day for granted and the list of people waiting is endless - I can't thank Breno's enough for such a silly idea.

The next one to be released on Friday is some exceptional history but may not be for everyone. It's with Pete "Lizard" Williams and he is an absolute character but as much as we try to curve excessive language and drug talk, I kinda decided to let Pete go as hard as he wanted because, well, it was simply his life, it's part of history and, for once, we figured to let it rip LOL.

It is one of the funniest ones I've done and I was popping Panadeine Forte like no tomorrow because I was laughing that hard that my neck near siezed up. It's something I'll never forget and I'm so glad we got it down. I figured that, at 80 years of age, the man was allowed to say it as it was.

So brace yourselves. If you don't like that sort of talk, don't listen. If you DO listen and don't adhere to the warnings, don't complain. And if you like a damn good laugh, tune in. His sample of photos below is an indicator of his transport journey.

Thanks Lizard, you're a living legend.
