In updated news, more than 100 jobs at the Dartbrook underground coal mine near Aberdeen have been slashed, as workers fight to access their accrued entitlements, the Mining and Energy Union has said.
MEU Northern Mining and NSW Energy President Robin Williams said the mine's receivers, FTI Consulting, are cutting the majority of the directly employed workforce without honouring workers' entitlements, and while retaining labour hire contractors.

"Just days after assuring us that operations would continue as normal during voluntary administration, FTI Consulting reversed course," Mr Williams said.

A number of miners at the Dartbrook underground coal mine in the Upper Hunter awoke today to an email from the mine's administrators saying they were being made redundant.

The miners, some of whom have worked at the mine for 14 months, said they were owed up to $20,000 and would be forced to seek new employment as they await their entitlements.

In early July, the mine was placed in the hands of receivers and managers Ben Campbell and David McGrath of FTI Consulting.

"He's in a bad way. I don't even know if he's still hanging in there."

Those were the chilling words Alan Playford heard as he prepared to descend into the Ravensworth coal mine near Singleton, in the Hunter Valley, in March 1992.

A miner, Noel Kelly, had been trapped under a shuttle car, his left leg torn from the hip. It was a scene out of a nightmare: thick blood, coal dust and a fading pulse.

A new memoir delves into the life of decorated paramedic Alan Playford.

Big frosty morning today, but it won't be long before we start thinking about summer and the pool.

There'll be plenty to splash about this summer with an all-new $1.5million water play attraction at Singleton Gym + Swim to be delivered just in time for the Christmas school holidays.

A splash pad will replace the existing outdoor toddler pool at the facility including spray jets, slides, fountains and interactive water play elements that Singleton Council General Manager Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr said would take cooling off to a whole new level.

Bullock, after being beaten into second place on odds-on favourite Blue Kingdom in race one, opened his winning account on the Kris Lees-trained Oakfield Pluto in race two, the Vale Paul Matts Maiden Handicap over 1007 metres./

At this month's Singleton Council meeting, it was unanimously agreed to adopt the Singleton Walking and Cycling Plan and the Singleton Traffic and Transportation Strategy.

There were synergies between the two policies, with submissions from the public crossing over, such as the call for greater public transport options and the need to base infrastructure works on the actual community use of those proposed works.

Not so much as build and they will be used, but rather what is needed to improve public access and encourage walking, cycling and better transport outcomes.

The Civic Centre was the place to be on Saturday night with the staging of the annual Business Singleton's awards ceremony.

It was a time to gather and celebrate the continuing success of the town's business chamber and the support it provides to businesses large and small, old and new and those local charities that are the heart and soul of our local community.
Among the special presentations on the night are the Milestone Awards that mark the longevity of local businesses and community organisations.

The Singleton Argus received one of these awards, marking its 150th year of publication - a significant achievement and perhaps the district's first business to reach such an age.
