Route 58: Happily, Ever Future by Emma Gibson

In the near future, Melbourne is selected for a bold experiment to solve a wicked problem plaguing urban planners around the globe: will jamming mobile phones during peak hour commutes improve safety?

Ash and Gem are regular passengers on the tram. Without screens to distract them, they make a connection, opening up the possibilities of further adventures together, but once normal mobile phone service is resumed, will they lose sight of one another again?

There are three alternative endings so you decide how the story ends depending on which stop you depart at.

Route 19: The Giants of Albion by Shivaun Plozza

Two sisters are side by side on the street. They wear school uniforms, pale blue check and royal blue blazer. Both girls should be in school, behind the concrete wall they lean against. Instead, they are side by side at the tram stop, waiting.

New Tramlines episode! Route 6: Love on the number 6 by Nova Weetman

He lives in St Kilda. South side of the river.
She lives in Brunswick. North side of the river.
Both have sworn allegiance to their own side. Sold their cars because they believed they'd never have to cross the mighty Yarra. When they met out of town at a festival, they argued playfully over which side was better. Now the only way they can see each other is by tram.

Route 109: Box Hill to Port Melbourne by Fiona Hardy

On the tram, a young woman grieves for her beloved late uncle. As she considers the inheritance he left her and her brother — a house in the Tasmanian forest for the two siblings to live the full life that he could not — the tramline traces the path of their time together over the years. As her memories unfold, and the past catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her brother has different plans for the gifted house, and that the death of their uncle may not have been an expected tragedy...

The optimum place to listen to it is on the route 109 tram, starting at stop 58, Box Hill Central, and ending at stop 129, Beacon Cove, but it can be listened to on any tram at any time.

Our first Tramlines episode is here!

Route 59: School Days Past by Sharmini Kumar

A woman takes her 12 year old daughter for high school orientation at a school near Essendon train station. As they take the tram home (towards Airport West), the mother tells her daughter about her own high school days, the memories she has of catching the tram, of meeting boys at the Airport West shopping centre, and her experiences of high school.

The optimum place to listen to it is on the route 59 tram, starting at stop 41, Essendon North Primary School & Keilor Rd, and ending at stop 59, Matthews Ave, but it can be listened to on any tram at any time.

In ep #4 of SHIFTING SUBJECTS, hop on board the Håt Xe Buýt (Singing Bus). Learn about the relationship languages have to place and community, and the years-long fight to save a well loved language program at Footscray Primary School.

The event was curated by arts producer Lana Nguyễn and artist Hoang Tran Nguyễn. They organised bus rides between two art exhibitions; one in Footscray, the other in Collingwood.

Each trip featured a different special guest who hosted the audience for its duration. Sơn Nguyễn has been playing and performing music since he was first gifted a guitar as a teenager.

He transported us to the Vietnam of his youth by playing Bóng Måt, a song by folk musician Phấm Thế M᝚.

SĆĄn is also Lana's dad. Together they translated the lyrics of BĂłng MĂĄt. Here's the first verse (imagine listening to this as you pass over the Maribyrnong, the CBD skyline in the distance):

"Where has it gone, where has it gone, the traditional lullaby sung to me when I came into this life?

Where has it gone, where has it gone, the singing of the young bird on the old tree at the old school?

And the green shade of the bamboo bush on the swinging of the hammock?

Don’t you know, don’t you know, all of these things have given me the shade of my life?"

Hear more as the Håt Xe Buýt moves closer to it's destination. There's language lessons, singalongs, and local history, along with stories from the campaign to save the Vietnamese Bilingual Program.

Photos by Alan Weedon and Hoang Tran Nguyễn.

When Alan Weedon met multidisciplinary artist Angie Pai, they were uni students taking their first steps in the adult world. Something he immediately noticed and admired about Angie was her ability to simultaneously have fun, youth-fuelled, messy adventures AND retain a closeness to her family and traditional values. It’s a dynamic that Angie explores in her practice to this day, often with the involvement and input of her mother, Shu-Ling Huang.
