"There is no doubt as to Australia's most valuable art publication... This small, independent, monthly publication bills itself as the essential guide to Australia's galleries, and this is the simple truth. For a long time I've been in the habit of marking up each new issue as though it were the form guide, carrying it with me from one gallery to the next."

'The Remaining Echo', solo works by Rmsina Daniel

Exhibition dates continue till 26th October at Australian National Capital Artists Inc

This exhibition explores the idea of originality by returning to its root—Mesopotamia, the birthplace of civilizations. Through reimagining symbols like the Winged Bull, ancient forms are transformed, not recreated.

The past becomes present, revealing that true originality may lie not in invention, but in rediscovery and reinterpretation of origins.

Winners and Finalists announced Bowness Photography Prize 2025!

Exhibition continues until 9 November at MAPh - Museum of Australian Photography

The works in the 20th Bowness Photography Prize offer a compelling view of what’s happening in contemporary photography in Australia, right now. These artists are exploring every dimension of how to make a photograph: you’ll find glass, metal, paper and screens among the surfaces and textures of these artworks, utilised to powerful effect across the shortlist.

This field of artists explores photographic practice in thrilling ways, making work that speaks to issues of our time, while observing the beauty, pain and vitality of our world.

The judging panel, consisting of artist and Bowness Photography Prize winner (2023) Anne Zahalka, Shaune Lakin ( Senior Curator Photography, NGA) and MAPh Director Anouska Phizacklea, selected artist Anna Higgins as the winner of the 2025 Bowness Photography Prize, for ‘Two horizons' (2025). This composite image demonstrates technical mastery of both analogue and digital processes, where Higgins works with light and landscape to create an otherworldly experience of Victorian Alpine country. She aims to ‘challenge conventions of how the landscape is depicted in photography, foregrounding the ephemeral, abstract and painterly qualities of film and light.’

The judges awarded honourable mentions to James Tylor for his work 'Tapa-arra through the landscape 1, 4, 5' and Sarah Rhodes for her work 'Chamber of projection I'.

GIRRA 2025 | Winner announced

Sunshine Coast-based artist Amanda Bennetts has been awarded the $25,000 major acquisitive prize at the launch of Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize 2025 on Saturday 23 August.

Bennetts' video work 'Carve Crevice from Grace' examines the capitalist ethos around productivity and the constructed notion of usefulness, particularly for those living with disability and chronic illness.

Co-judge Michelle Newton described Bennetts' piece as a compelling performance that highlights the futility of labour under capitalism. "With the artist herself as protagonist, the work is characterised by a ritualised, Sisyphean endeavour - breaking up sandstone in a task that resists logic or resolution," she said. "It becomes a poetic encounter, where the inexplicability of her actions adds a layer of unexpected humour and poignancy."

The work was selected from 16 finalists from across the country by a judging panel including Waanyi artist Judy Watson, Michelle Newton, Head of Visual Arts, Creative Australia and Sarah Thomson, Director of Hervey Bay Regional Gallery.

'Carve Crevice from Grace' was originally commissioned by Accessible Arts and the Sydney Opera House. It will now join the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery collection alongside works by other leading Australian artists.

The Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize exhibition continues until 16 November at Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, Queensland.
