Lately in our work, we’ve been exploring more of the technical side of how we approach photography.
Most of the time Will and I feel most creative when we’re able to rely on our intuition while shooting. We naturally love noticing the details, feeling into which corners of a space might be beautiful to photograph, and getting a sense of the environment and the people we’re working with so we can best capture what’s in front of us.
But lately, we’ve also been pouring a lot of attention and energy into using our gear more intentionally from a technical perspective.
Over the past few months, I’ve loved using flash to craft light, and I’ve been absorbing so much about how far I can stretch our gear to achieve a cleaner, more sculpted look.
So naturally, I’ve been joined at the hip with my Godox’s on recent shoots.
But on this shoot for Seraph + Stone, (a beautiful jewellery brand about to launch) I’d spent the majority of my time crafting light with my strobes when, all of a sudden, the sun peeped out from behind the clouds and said:
“Tay… I know you’re working hard but sit back and enjoy some organic, straight-from-the-source sunlight.”
And boy, did I.
The afternoon sunlight filtered so beautifully through an olive tree and landed right on my setup (slide 2 + 3).
The lesson I’m taking from it is one I find myself constantly learning: balance balance balance.
Yes of course it’s a wonderful thing to expand myself as a photographer and deepen my craft. But what a beautiful reminder it is to notice what’s already in front of you to look at something and see ‘potential’. I think that’s the whole point of photography at the end of the day - to not get lost outside the moment.
