BUSHFIRES COULD BE SPOTTED FROM SPACE AND TARGETED USING TECH DEVELOPED ON COAST 🔥🛰

New technology that can detect bushfires within a minute of them starting, will be trialled in bushland around Noosa.

Fireball International uses satellites to look for infrared heat spots on earth, then sends out immediate alerts to authorities including flame size, rates of spread, and spotting.

Founder Christopher Tylor says the technology is already having great success in California and the system will be tested here this year.

"If you're detecting fire early, get a helicopter in, dump one of the helitanks filled with water on that, then the fire is gone," he said.

"It doesn't become a problem and we can report a fire when it is about the size of a shed or a tennis court."

Fireball plans to launch it’s own satellite by 2022 and a second by 2024.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud was shown the technology at the Peregian Beach Digital Hub yesterday.

He says the technology is the best in the world.

"The fire hub here, having gone through it, I can see that there will be more that will be done here," he said.

"I think this could be a centre of excellence for a lot of research and commercialisation of a lot of ideas with respect to fire fighting."

Rec centre pool to be closed and land redeveloped into green space…

Latest update regarding the Rec centre, provided by St Andrew’s:

Dear Residents/Community,

St Andrew’s Anglican College wishes to share an update regarding the future of the Peregian Springs Rec Centre. We deeply value the role this facility has played in fostering community connections and providing a shared space for residents.

When the College acquired the Rec Centre, we committed to keeping the pool open to the public for two years, ensuring continued access for the community. Having fulfilled this commitment, the College has made the decision to close the pool effective Friday 4 April.

As part of our long-term Master Plan, the Rec Centre will be redeveloped into a dedicated sports precinct for our students. In the short term, the pool and surrounding area will be repurposed into an open green space, retaining the existing shade, grass, and seating to provide a welcoming environment for community use, especially for those visiting the café.

This transition is a necessary step to support the growth of the College and meet the needs of current and future students. With space on campus increasingly limited, this additional land will enable the development of enhanced facilities that will benefit both our students and the broader Sunshine Coast community.

We understand this news may be disappointing to those who frequent the Rec Centre, and we are committed to making this transition as respectful and smooth as possible.
The long-term development of a new sports precinct will focus primarily on our students, however we will explore opportunities to incorporate elements for community use and will share details as plans progress in years to come.

The initial development and plans to remove the pool, will be submitted to the council in due course.

We thank you for your understanding and support as we move forward with this important step in St Andrew’s journey.
