Another incredible photograph from the Ocean Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum. This image taken by Daniel Sly shows the male eastern gobbleguts carrying his partners eggs in his mouth – which he does so without complaint throughout the brooding season – which is typically summer. Typically active at night, they remain shy and quick to hide, darting into crevices or kelp at the first sign of disturbance.
"This portrait was captured during a night dive beneath a busy fishing and ferry wharf in Sydney Harbour," say Daniel. "After a long, patient wait, the gobbleguts finally emerged from the shadows. I used a narrow beam of light from above to softly illuminate the fish and its egg clutch helping it stand out from the cluttered background."
This is just one of the many incredible photographs at the Ocean Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum which runs from now until 3 May 2026. Don't miss out! .sly

The Head On Photo Festival, Australia’s premier photography event, was targeted by vandals late last Friday night, leaving organisers and the arts community devastated.

Visitors to the iconic Bondi Beach promenade on Saturday morning (November 29) were met with the sight of several outdoor exhibition panels defaced. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, with offenders spraying paint across exhibition structures along Queen Elizabeth Drive and Ramsgate Avenue.
Approximately 80% of the images from the Pavilion to North Bondi were defaced.
