The Select Inn Penrith | Family room $245.00

This motel has been on our to-do list for a while, as we have all grown up in the area and driven past this building all our lives without ever having a reason to stay there.

The room was clean, well maintained and surprisingly quiet considering the proximity to a major road.

The most unique aspect of this place is the exterior of the building, with large tinted windows and imposing brick work more reminiscent of an embassy or government building than a reasonably priced motor inn.

This simulated sense of grandeur is a welcome change to most motels that do not present themselves beyond what is required of them, and in the process bring down the reputation of the area they are in due to their lackluster appearance.

RYDE INN - Ryde, NSW

This was a great motel to end our year. The family room was incredibly spacious, with plenty of room for us to spread out and relax with a few drinks.
The pool was very nice, but it is the kind of motel pool that is closely surrounded by other rooms’ balconies, giving the feeling of being watched and listened to, making it hard to fully enjoy the space.
For any faults that this place has, everywhere there is the sense that every aspect is being looked after and thought of, although on a low budget.
Do yourself a favor this summer and book a staycation when the weather gets swealtering.

Ascot Motor Inn - Wahroonga (Hornsby NSW)

Surprisingly, our room here was dripping with character and warmth, with extensive wood paneling and vintage trimmings creating a unique and cozy ambience reminiscent of a European cottage.
This character was echoed in the mock Tudor cladding on the exterior of the building, but apart from that there is little on the outside to indicate the quality of the rooms within.
The carpark, entrance and gardens all need extensive work, as they currently create the impression of your typical run-down dodgy motel.
However, we are aware that this is exactly what they are doing, as we managed to speak to the owner, who is highly motivated to improve the motel whilst preserving its unique character.
Bonus points for a bottle opener attached to the wall, and a great restaurant on-site.
