I’ve been sober for almost 17 years, and one thing I wish I understood in the early days of recovery was the impact shame and guilt were having on my body.

Every time I visited my mum or my family, I would feel exhausted. I thought I was doing something wrong. I thought it was my fault.

It took me years to understand that shame was affecting my physical state in a massive way.

Once I understood it, I could start treating it with kindness instead of beating myself up. Today, shame has very little power over me.

If you’d like to sit with people who understand, come join my community.
