In Athens ... summer vacation time
When schools closed in the summer in the neighborhood behind Omonia those years most kids didn't go on vacation....

They were trying to get some money... They were dying at the grocery store....

at the barber shop .... to the coal man who was also selling wine and declaring present for errands.

The afternoon was theirs for alana to the dirt road for the ride the older ones to the summer cinemas to see what they were playing although the old cantilac was passing by with the dooduka and updating.....

The neighborhood wasn't deserted in the summer .... from the afternoon and then he moved to the sidewalk with stools .... chairs .... little tables ...

A celebration ..... the children at play .... women to knit ... to embroider...

to gossip... the men come back from work to eat and go to the cafe with the gypsy tables on the road and the kid to water the dirt road with the watering machine.

For all our grandmothers, who handed over this world to us after for years they carried it on their shoulders, as they also received it from their mothers:
Beautiful and immaculate.
For these grandmothers we have to write, talk about them and remember them, so they don't remain forgotten.
These are what kept this place alive.
These carried wood from the mountain, washed, ironed, cooked, medicated us.
They had no stop. From hard work in the campo, back to loving home and household.
These were the ones when you walked outside their door:
"Come, sit down so I can buy you a cherry sweet and a cool water. ”
These are the ones I'm talking about, about Giorgia's pie, Zografos' candies and dumplings and Olga's spells.
For all the grandmothers in our country, I speak. The Heroes.
