In over a decade of producing online video content, I've seen an irrefutable link between the quality of your final product and the time and effort spent in pre-production. I'd say it's arguably the most important part of your whole production process.

For eCommerce sites, probably the stage at which a simple crank of the handle can really increase the return on your video investment.
Check out the tips below and let me know your thoughts.

If you've got a keen eye for detail, you'll notice I initially said I'd give four tips but I got carried away and ended up giving five. I either cannot count or got uncontrollably excited and carried away. I'll let you decide! ;)

Last week I was talking about pre-production tips, this week it's all about production tips and how eCommerce brands can make professional videos go from costing thousands of dollars to just a few hundred.

There's quite a few levers you can pull that will minimise the cost of your production without sacrificing quality.

The first one is to invest in a professional presenter. Whilst this may seem counterintuitive at first as it's an extra cost on your production budget, the rate at which it speeds up your production will mean that you can invest in up to 4x more videos compared to the amount that Barry in the Marketing Team will get through in one day.

Don't take me wrong. Good ol' Bazza in the Marketing Team is a gun, he knows his product like the back of his hand, AND, more importantly, is confident to be in front of camera. However, the likelihood is that he will stumble on his words and potentially not connect with your audience. Don't let Bazza do that to your brand.

Instead tag the Bazza in YOUR team in the comments section below so he/she can listen to my other tips on producing professional video content for your brand at scale and at cost.

Sorry to any Bazzas out there!

The last video in the eCommerce video tips series.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when producing video content is thinking that it's "job done" as soon as the video is published.

The reality is that having just created this really valuable asset for your brand, you've got to start making it sweat for it to yield a return.

Although the tips I share in this video are specific to eCommerce video, the truth is that they are applicable to any industry.

I would say that as a rule of thumb, you should spend just as long in optimising the video for exposure as you do in the pre-production stages.

That means tweaking frame size and length if you're going to deploy in different platforms, and if you're going to host on your site, making sure it's optimised for play rate and easily found.

If you're going to take only ONE bit of advice from this video, is to never EVER let your video hosting platform automatically choose a thumbnail for your video.

In the eCommerce world, a good thumbnail has a direct correlation to More $.

I’m looking for 3 eCommerce stores who want to double conversions in the next 30 days.

So, if you...
1. Have an eCommerce store
2. Sell over 10 items in that store
3. Can deliver stock to Sydney in week commencing October 14th

Type “product reviews” in the comments below - I’ll be choosing people this week.

I’m launching a pilot calculator called ‘Return On Your Video Investment Calculator’ (super creative, I know) and I'm looking for a few specific people to fine-tune the algorithm I’ve created.

You can find the link to the calculator on the first comment below.Comment with the words “product reviews”, and I’ll get you all the details. Or if you know anyone who may be interested, tag them in the comments section.

A massive shoutout to Chernin from Streamline Analytics who helped build this awesome calculator. If you need a hand bringing data to life - he’s your main man!

Data's worth more than gold.

And despite the copious amounts of data that video gives you about your customers, it remains a largely untapped resource for marketeers and UX designers.

The plethora of of video hosting platforms now available also makes it quite hard to know what data is important to measure and how to measure it so see if your videos are complimenting your brand's strategic goals.

In this video I go through the pros and cons of 5 of the major video hosting platforms ( Facebook, Instagram, Wistia and YouTube) and how to make the most of the analytics capabilities they give you.

Are you using data to measure the impact of your videos?

Does knowing when a video is going to end make you more inclined to watch it all?

Keen to hear some anecdotal feedback as (to my knowledge) there are no studies to prove/disprove this latest video fad.

This little label writer is saving me about 30 mins a week (a day a year!) in not having to manually write addresses for the copies of my book I post.

I love it so much that I made a visual representation of how it makes me feel.

Do you know what a LinkedIn Engagement Pod is? I’ve dabbled in a couple of them and have well and truly come out from the dark side.

Call me a reformed survivor questioning the use of these new techniques to generate engagement on social media.

What are YOUR thoughts on them? Is it merely a means to an end? Does it reflect your brand properly?

It’s a cheery start to my Linkedin content for 2020 - let’s hope it’s not a taste of things to come! 😂

The more ubiquitous video becomes, the more its strategic planning falls by the wayside.

Check out these two examples of how one product should be marketed on two different channels, with two different videos, for two different outcomes.

The aim with eCommerce video, ultimately, is to give consumers the best possible viewer experience they can have so that they make that emotional connection with your product and brand.

Few nuggets of knowledge here for both agencies and retailers for their future video production.

Hit me up with any questions if you want further tips/advice. Or if you disagree - would love to hear differing opinions on this.
