Australia is on track to get its own ChatGPT.

Maincode, backed by Stake founder Ed Craven, has secured a multi-million dollar investment to train a sovereign Large Language Model (LLM) onshore in Melbourne.

Led by AI veteran Dave Lemphers and a core team of PhDs from Melbourne and RMIT, MainCode will own every line of code from metal to model.

“We’re targeting the end of this year to release our first fully trained-from-scratch, sovereign large language model built entirely in Australia on infrastructure we operate and control," says Lemphers.

"In a world where most companies are wrapping someone else’s API or fine-tuning foreign models, we believe Australia needs to own the main code of its AI future."

In a month where the biggest tech companies led U.S. stock market indices to successive new highs, the CEO of sizzling AI chip firm Nvidia also joined the upward march.

Jensen Huang begins August as the sixth richest person in the world, per Forbes’ estimates, up from No. 10 at the start of July. His fortune expanded by $17 billion in the past month to nearly $155 billion as Nvidia became the first company with a market capitalisation of $4 trillion; its shares rose about 14% during July.

“Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today (Wednesday 9 July 2025) and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing,” a spokesperson confirmed.
