Hundreds of volunteer surf lifesavers gathered on Bondi Beach just after 8am on Saturday, lining the shoreline arm in arm for two minutes of silence.

A tribute from NSW Premier to Bondi hero Ahmed al Ahmed.

“Ahmed is a real-life hero. Last night, his incredible bravery no doubt saved countless lives when he disarmed a terrorist at enormous personal risk.

It was an honour to spend time with him just now and to pass on the thanks of people across NSW.

There is no doubt that more lives would have been lost if not for Ahmed’s selfless courage.

Thank you, Ahmed.”

Donations have surged for Ahmed al Ahmed after he heroically crash-tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen behind Sunday’s terror attack in Bondi.

The campaign drew international attention after US hedge fund manager and Forbes rich-lister Bill Ackman called for a verified fundraiser to be established so al Ahmed could be supported directly. Ackman later donated $99,999 himself and shared the link publicly, saying he had been told the funds would be released only to al Ahmed.
