Sheridan, our brand ambassador, is helping us spread the message to a wider audience, beyond the bubble.

A big part of this message is how kids and teenagers benefit from free textile play, what I'm now calling "textile tinkering" because it's a similar concept to opening up an old clock... deconstructing would-be landfilled clothes turns them into alternative education opportunities for those (like me) who can't read instructions or follow a pattern.

Reconstructing them in whatever way they choose is just as important — I relate this part to giving a preschooler butcher paper and hand-paint and letting them go crazy. Much more likely to instil a love for art than if you told said preschooler to trace a drawing and colour within the lines..

And just look at the results of this freestyle, unorthodox approach!

Thanks Sheridan for your gorgeous patience and commitment to our cause. The kids love you.

Got a creative kid who loves fashion but not into following rules? This one's for them. Our hands-on holiday workshops (for Years 5–12 and up) invite young people to thrift, deconstruct, rework and reimagine secondhand clothes — with zero pressure to make things “perfect”. Led by young mentors (aged 16–30) who are recent fashion grads or self-taught upcyclers, we dive into things like: ✂️ Freestyle upcycling 🪡 Creative embroidery & embellishment 🧵 T-shirt crochet 🧷 Visible mending & repairHosted at the Inner West Sustainability Hub in collaboration with Re Place, each day starts with a thrift session using provided vouchers, followed by a full day of making magic with sewing machines, scrap fabric, and creative support. We don’t teach fashion like school. We let them explore, express and experiment — on their own terms.📅 July School Holidays 📍 Inner West Sustainability Hub 🎟️ All materials includedDM for the flyer or booking link!

Just a few weeks to go until our next fashion camp… and something very exciting is going to occur on the Wednesday. (More on that later.)

Does anyone know where I might have luck getting these posters up? We’re obviously going to the schools with them but what about cafes and shops and other places where teens and mums of tweens/teens might congregate..

The kids who do this LOVE It and I’m already getting repeat bookings BUT I want to get this out to a bigger audience so I can run Fashion camps simultaneously across different LGAs and I want to be able to run regular term time events too.

There is not enough textile education in schools - and the NSW education board is well aware of that and would love our help - so we’re kind of starting a revolution here. That’s all. Ambitious much?

If you can think of anywhere in Sydney where you’ve noticed they regularly have flyers and posters promoting other local businesses, please comment below and we’ll begin our good old-fashioned paper round!

Hello lovely supporters,

Turns out our Questioning Fashion podcast is in the top 25% in the world in terms of listeners/downloads. Last year it appeared in double digit ‘favourite’ lists according to Spotify.

Not bad for a pod we started a year ago, recording between customers in the back room of co-host Ali Dibley’s vintage store in Bell Street. (The fabulous clothes provide great sound proofing from the chicken shop next door.)

Our tagline is “because there’s more to fashion than shopping” since Ali and I are lucky enough to have already discovered the joys of circular fashion, and of ‘shopping’ our own wardrobes by restyling, reworking, upcycling (and outsourcing all that if we need!) - so we want to share that with our listeners, while also picking apart the psychological and social complexities of shopping and fashion through the ages.

In our latest episode about the phenomenon of global dress-ups for pop concerts and even movies (well, Barbie at least), we discuss our inner conflict.

On one hand we love to see so many have fun with fashion as communities, on the other,
we wonder whether the Swifties’ 7 million once-worn plastic garments are destined for landfill. About 20% of those are the same sparkly mini skirt from Shein.

We address the sequin-covered elephant in the room but with warmth and understanding and humour.

We hope to welcome you to our Substack community soon.

Will sequined Swifties end up destroying the planet???

While it’s actually on Marrickville’s Illawarra Road, Bell Street vintage store does feel a million miles away from the busy inner-west road once you walk through the front door. Jewel-hued taffeta, vintage lace and tulle, silks, velvets and intricate embroidery… oh, and then there are the seq...
