Jo was joined in the studio this week by journalist and political biographer Troy Bramston, to discuss his latest book, Gough Whitlam: The Vista of the New. The interview focused on Gough Whitlam’s ten years living in the Sutherland Shire, examining how this period influenced his political development and why it has often received limited attention in earlier biographies.

The conversation also covered Troy’s research process and the local sources used to reconstruct Whitlam’s life during this formative decade.

Firstly, after the recent events at Bondi Beach last Sunday our hearts are aching. We mourn the victims, stand with families, and thank our first responders, law enforcement, and brave members of the public for compassion, courage, and unity.

This will be my final program for 2025 and it is jammed packed with our regular segments, we will be playing some great Christmas songs and we will reveal the Number 1 from those great years of 1975, 1985, and 1995.

The number 1 song for 1975 showcases the band’s shift from bubble-glam to hard-rock. Its catchy riffs and theatrical flair shine. The song became an international hit, solidifying the band's glam-rock status. What else would be number 1 but a glam rock classic. In 1985 this single, emphasising unity and shared responsibility during global crises and becoming a landmark collaboration in pop culture.
For 1995 we hear an hip-hop track reflects on street life and survival, blending gospel, soul, and rap influences.

🕗🌲💕Firstly, I’d like to pass on my sincere condolences & prayers to the families and everyone affected by the horrendous event that took place at Bondi Beach last Sunday 14th December. Due to the incredibly sad event of that day, I feel that many including myself would like to hear some happy uplifting music from the jukebox this Saturday. However, as it is the last weekend before Christmas, I couldn’t let it go without including some special Christmas Carols and some catchy Christmas songs.
At 10am I’ll also be playing a bracket of pure Aussie songs, which we know and love, to help us through this sad time.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Peaceful New Year.

This week’s episode shines a spotlight on a chapter of Australian political history that unfolded right here in the Sutherland Shire.

Jo will be joined in the studio by Troy Bramston the author of a major new Gough Whitlam biography. This interview will focus on his formative years in our community, how local life shaped his thinking, the people and organisations he connected with, and why this period has often been overlooked.

It’s a fascinating conversation for anyone interested in local history, politics, and the stories that help shape Australia.

As we get very close to revealing the Number 1 from those great years of 1975, 1985, and 1995, I look forward to revealing the Number 2 songs from each of these unforgettable decades!

The number 2 song for 1975 is a quintessential example of bright British pop-rock, featuring jangly guitars and upbeat piano that convey optimism despite its title. The catchy hook line suggests a readiness for change, transforming winter gloom into a moment of release. While for 1985 the number 2 song comes from the soundtrack of a movie celebrating freedom and self-expression through dance. It has playful yet confident vocals inviting listeners to lose themselves in the rhythm, showcasing dance as an emotional release and connection. While for 1995 is a high-energy Eurodance reinterpretation of a disco classic that became one of their biggest hits. Featuring a rapper this remix transforms the smooth original into a club-ready anthem, blending house beats, electronic textures, and hip-hop elements.
