Meet the Judge: Peter Roach 🤝

We are thrilled to introduce one of our incredible judges for the NSW/ACT Community Achievement Awards, Peter Roach! As the Director of Sales and Marketing for Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney, Peter is a hospitality leader passionate about connecting brands with communities. 🏨

For Peter, judging is all about the emotional connection to each story. He finds it "humbling, inspiring, and leaves you feeling uplifted." He tells us, "You meet extraordinary people through their nominations and walk away knowing you have played a part in recognising their impact." 💖

Meet Maryam Nigroh, nominated for the Leadership Award!

At just 15 years old, Maryam has made history as the youngest person ever to independently write, direct, produce, edit, and star in a feature-length film. Her project, Under Spotlights, is a monumental feat of creativity, perseverance, and leadership, challenging industry norms by empowering a cast and crew of young creatives under 15. Maryam's leadership skills were on full display as she managed over 100 people throughout production, handling everything from scheduling and venues to catering, legal paperwork, and budget management.

Meet Melissa Neville - Missy's Magic Styles, nominated for the Small Business Award!

Missy, the founder of Missy’s Magic Styles, is a passionate community advocate and mobile hairdresser. Living with communication dyslexia and special needs herself, she's built a thriving business that supports others facing hardship. Missy donates hundreds of hours each year providing free or discounted haircuts to palliative care clients, individuals with disability, DV survivors, foster children, and the elderly across Canberra.

She has also become a go-to service for Canberra Hospital and other health professionals needing urgent palliative care support. As a tireless volunteer for over 16 years, she serves as a canteen convenor and school helper at Macgregor Primary School. Missy is currently advocating for a dedicated palliative care facility for children in Canberra, and runs an education program teaching low-cost hair and product knowledge for youth and people with disability.

🏆 From Hesitation to Inspiration: A Winner's Journey

"Like many others, I have been reluctant to put up my hand when it comes to awards... But when you are passionate about something... sooner or later you have to step outside your comfort zone and take the leap."

We're incredibly inspired by Suzanne Gearing, our 2020 Transgrid Leadership Award Winner, who shared her powerful experience with the NSW & ACT Community Achievement Awards!

Suzanne emphasizes the immense value of the process itself:
"That very first step of putting your process and achievements into words is probably one of the most valuable gifts you end up with… the opportunity to celebrate your wins, learn from your mistakes, and become an observer of your project. That alone is worth the time it takes to enter."
