Some wins against the tech bros for writers.

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic disclosed in a court filing in California on Friday that it agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a class action from a group of authors who accused the company of using their books to train its AI chatbot Claude without permission – the largest copyright settlement in U.S. history.

On one side we have a government wanting us to give up our rights, in the other universities want to stop us writing what we believe and think.. and the talking about it.

A Victorian writers festival's code of conduct has set a "dangerous precedent", one author says, after more than 50 writers and moderators withdrew from the event.

Author Jess Hill, who is one of dozens of writers who withdrew from the Bendigo Writers Festival, was supposed to speak at a La Trobe University panel on Sunday and said a line in the code of conduct was "totally subjective" and set a "dangerous precedent".

She questioned why organisers would invite authors to speak if they did not trust they could engage in respectful debate.

Festival spokesperson Julie Amos said the intent of the code of conduct may have been "lost in oversimplification".

"All we wanted to do was to provide some parameters for people to have safe and respectful conversations," she said.

Yep, that’s how it feels when someone steals your words.

“The most serious issue facing working Australian writers today’’.

That’s how acclaimed Australian author Trent Dalton has described the threat posed by multibillion-dollar tech giants who are using the work of writers like him to train AI language models.

He made the comments after discovering that multiple editions of his books, including Boy Swallows Universe, were on a pirate site used to train Meta’s AI platforms.

In Australia right now there's a big discussion about the Productivity Commission's suggestion that the big tech companies should have free access to content "fair use" to train their models. Content creators like me who make a living off writing are appalled. Here's a deeper discussion about this in relation to writing and books.
