THE BONDI TO MANLY WALK

Nick Hollo is an architect who worked for 15 years with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, turning Cockatoo Island naval dockyards into an art destination.

He’s also an established artist, widely known and loved for his images of Sydney coastline in all its many moods. In the end, he says, he loves to paint the effect of light on water. Our light, our water.

Now, as a member of the Walking Volunteers, he has created and curated this latest exhibition at the Dickerson Gallery to celebrate the astonishing public gift of the 80km Bondi to Manly walk view here Nick joins us on The Sydneyist to chat about the magic of walking near Sydney harbour and the passion-skill involved in capturing Sydney light on water on paper.

IS NSW COURTING TOTALITARIANISM?

Many of our cultural advances have arisen through protest.
Mass demonstrations have changed attitudes to war, racism, land rights and feminism.
In theory, peaceful public protest is core democracy.

Yet NSW, unlike Victoria, Queensland and the ACT, has no express right to protest.
Peaceful demonstrators here can now be jailed for merely climbing on a building
or structure
or blocking a main road.

Emeritus Professor Simon Rice is an expert in protest law
who last year successfully sued the state
for his rough and wrongful arrest during a peaceful campus protest.

Join Elizabeth Farrelly in conversation with Professor Rice
as they discuss WHY PROTEST MATTERS and how the law should be changed to enable it.

Sydney’s first Skyscraper

The first AMP building at Circular Quay was designed by Graham Thorp, of Peddle Thorp and Walker and opened by the Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies in 1962.

The first building to breach the statutory 150-foot height limit, it was elegant, self-possessed and remarkably prescient, being cooled by seawater. Now it has been fully, glamorously refurbished.

Former Assistant NSW Government Architect ANDREW ANDERSONS knew and admired Graham Thorp, later became a partner in Peddle Thorp and Walker and is a walking encyclopaedia on all things Sydney. Andrew joins Elizabeth Farrelly this week on The Sydneyist to discuss the building, its significance in marking Sydney’s coming of age and its recent refurbishment.
