The Pajama Game

Neglected Musicals is proud to finally bring the beloved Broadway classic

The Pajama Game to the stage this November for a strictly limited performances.

Winner of the 1955 Tony Award for Best Musical—and over fifty years later, the Tony Award for Best Revival—The Pajama Game is a timeless tale of love, labour, and laughter. With an fantasic score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross the musical features beloved theatre standards including Hey There, Steam Heat, and Hernando’s Hideaway.
Set in the early 1950s, the story takes place at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, where tensions rise as workers campaign for a 7½ cent pay increase. Amid the unrest, sparks fly between the factory’s new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, and Babe Williams, head of the union grievance committee—setting the stage for both a labour showdown and a romantic tug-of-war.
The original Australian production of The Pajama Game, was presented by J.C. Williamson and premiered at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne in 1957. The production starred Toni Lamond as Babe Williams and William Newman as Sid Sorokin, alongside Keith Petersen as Hines, Jill Perryman as Mabel, Don Richards as Prez, and Tikki Taylor as Gladys.

The Pajama Game will be directed and choreographed by Lisa Callingham this spirited musical is packed with lively dance numbers and heartfelt performances.

Neglected Musicals will present the show with scripts in hand and piano accompaniment—after just one day of rehearsal.
Cast to be announced soon.

KISS ME KATE

Musical theatre productions are getting ever more lavish as they compete to get you off your couch. Just go to the likes of the Les Misérables arena spectacular or Back To The Future: The Musical later this year to see what millions of dollars look like when they’re thrown at a stage.

This production of Kiss Me, Kate by Neglected Musicals is the antithesis of all that. Cole Porter’s take on Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew has barely been seen in Australia since its maiden tour wrapped in 1954, which makes it perfect for the company that producer and publicist Michelle Guthrie started in 2010. She takes such underappreciated fare, puts scripts in the hands of top-notch musicals talent – such as Amy Lehpamer (& Juliet) and Joshua Robson (Phantom Of The Opera) for Kiss Me, Kate –- and gives them minimal rehearsal before putting them in front of punters.

“I think people really like the ride. The audiences kind of feel part of it,” Guthrie has said of the ‘read-through’ concept. “They know there’s only been a day or two’s rehearsal. That really brings about a different energy in the room.”

Kiss Me, Kate is at Sydney’s Foundry Theatre, April 14-16.
