People have been asking me: 'do you speak Spanish now?'

And the answer is kind of....nuanced. It's a bit like

learning to play a musical instrument.

When I first started I couldn't even make the sounds right. (dos thervethas por favor?)

And it felt like pushing a cart uphill for ages.

But then after maybe 6 months, I was able to look back at where I'd started,

and realise I wasn't a total beginner anymore.

And then our family visited and they were like -oh wow you speak Spanish!

But only because they were back at 'hola!' 101.

Meanwhile I was still comparing myself to all of the spaniards around me

who'd grown up speaking it.

They were all like the Miles Davis of spanish and I was still playing Mary Had a Little Lamb on the glocenspiel.

Also, it's really dependant on the topic, who I'm speaking to and how I'm feeling.

Trying to conjugate verbs after diaz cervecas esta un poco dificil.

But, just like playing a muscial instrument, it's a really enjoyable pursuit.

And every now and then I'll jam spanish with someone and I'm surprised by what ends up coming out.
