Moogahlin Performing Arts was formed in Redfern in November 2007 by a group of Indigenous theatre artists, educators and community workers in honour of the late Kevin Smith's request and in memory of the founding members of the Black Theatre. Moogahlin is a vibrant and inclusive artistic meeting place that the communities of Redfern and Waterloo recognise as a safe and nurturing environment to sha

re their stories with respect to cultural practices. Moogahlin aims to create and tell community-based stories, develop a comprehensive youth theatre and produce distinctive, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary performance works. Moogahlin supports both emerging and established Aboriginal performing artists, nurturing work created, produced and performed by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people.

Meet 2025 Yellamundie (Storyteller) H Lawrence Sumner

From the Ngarrindjeri nation in the Coorong Region, H Lawrence Sumner is a writer and former teacher, with original works in theatre and song, as well as dabbling in film.

Steps of the Mighty
Beth was a sprinter in her younger days. She could outrun any whitefella on the track, with or without shoes. These days she is lying in bed, in a nursing home – waiting for the Sydney Olympics to begin.
Spencer, Liam and Jimmy are her three children. Spread around the world doing their art or their sport.
Beth has been telling her kids about a girl from Mackay who can run like the wind. It’s her dying hope that all three of her children will catch this race and watch the girl from Mackay run in the steps of the mighty.

AI is flattening culture and what it is to be human. This is part of what came out in the 10th World Summit Report.

AI is flattening cultural representations and contributing to the homogenisation of culture, reinforcing bias and dominant worldviews and threatening the uniqueness of human creativity as it does.

Culture plays a critical role in not just using technology but in reflecting on, critiquing and questioning it.

The creative and cultural sector needs to mobilise now to reclaim its influence over AI narratives, reaffirm that the digital realm is fundamentally cultural and champion the importance of cultural considerations, respect for creators’ rights and transparency are paramount in tech regulation.

We are proud to stand alongside our sister organisations in launching the First Nations Performing Arts Workforce Development Framework 2025–2030.

Together, our companies represent a range of First Peoples’ Performing Arts disciplines, art forms and expertise. Offering a First Nations-led vision for real change – for us, by us.

From these unique viewpoints the Framework addresses the current and enduring challenges surrounding First Peoples performing artists and artsworkers, from training and employment, to retention and self-determined leadership.

The Framework is a call to action for long-term investment, cultural safety, and 100% First Peoples representation in our sector.

This is about legacy. Sovereignty, and a future where our stories, voices, and labour are valued and sustained.
