Hometown Hero - On a day when the sun shone primrose and blue, one man who made his debut back in 2014 hit 250 appearances for his place of birth, Warrington.
A 72-6 win over Castleford wasn’t a bad way to honour this achievement and making it a 4-0 start to Warrington’s Super League campaign has got fans thinking, could it be? But that’s a question for another time.
Here today, we celebrate a man who has given his life to the Warrington Wolves. Let’s be honest, though, he’s faced some criticism in the past; only during the off-season it did seem a number of fans would be happy if he left. I, for one, am glad he didn’t; it would’ve been a sad way to leave for a player who played such a big part in that great Challenge Cup final win against the Saints back in 2019. Arguably his best year in primrose and blue.
Whatever you think of Joe, you can’t say he’s ever taken a backward step; always willing to run hard, 250 appearances doesn’t happen by luck. This is also on the back of recovering from the dreaded ACL injury he suffered in 2022. He had to work hard then, just like he has throughout his whole career.
It wasn’t just Philbin’s achievement to celebrate; Matty made his comeback scoring a hat-trick, new big man Kelepi scored four, and one of Warrington’s best Super League results for a long time.
As I said before, Joe’s shining moment up to now is probably scoring against Saints in that memorable cup final; however, he and all of us will hope that come October, his biggest moment is still to come. 😃🏉🟡🔵
