England - could they?
When they kick off the 2025 Ashes series at Wembley this Saturday afternoon, it'll mark the return of a series that hasn't been played for 22 years, a series which Australia won 3-0.
Since then, though, England have played Australia in different competitions, but the results stayed the same; England themselves haven't beaten Australia in a match since 1995. Great Britain, which many people would say is basically the same, beat them in 2006, but even that is nearly 20 years ago, so how the hell do England beat them this time?
Well, let's look at three big positives: it's in England, the first test at Wembley in front of over 60,000 mainly England fans, our weather conditions, and our coach is Shaun Wane, a proven winner.
However, I hear you say they have a team full of superstars; maybe so, but we have a few ourselves. Herbie Farnworth - possibly the best centre in the world at the moment - Mikey Lewis, a recent Grand Final and Man of the Match winner, Morgan Knowles, a future NRL star, Dom Young, 73 tries in 92 NRL games for the star winger, and there is, of course, my team's captain and England's George Williams - a lot has been said about George this year, but let's remember he's never let England down, and while some may look at his time in the NRL as a negative, he was only one game away from a Grand Final and is still wanted by the NRL now; let's just say we have stars too.
I'm not being silly, though; I get it. I live in Australia; I've seen these players up close - Reece Walsh, Cameron Munster, Harry Grant, Isaac Yeo, and possibly one of the best players ever, Nathan Cleary. You do have to hope at least some of them have a bad day, but this is an inexperienced squad; four players are set to make their debut, many haven't played in England before, and many definitely wouldn't have played together before; it could make a big difference.
For too long now, Aussies have looked down at the English game, even after the last two World Club Challenges; it's made no difference. We have the perfect opportunity to finally make them sit up and take notice, and there's nothing the Aussies hate more than losing.
1970 was the last time Australia lost an Ashes series; 4th July in Sydney, Great Britain winning 21-17 to win the test series 2-1. Fifty-five years later, George and Co. have the chance to make history once again. I'm sure every sportsperson dreams of becoming a hero, a legend, a player never forgotten; now iyour chance boys; don't let more years go by.
Three weeks, three venues, three games, one epic rivalry - England vs. Australia; it doesn't get much bigger than this. C'mon England ๐๐๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ
