The new year doesn’t need a grand reset. Patti Smith has long resisted the idea that time moves neatly forward, once writing: “Time takes time.” It’s a line that feels more useful than most end-of-year manifestos.
For Smith, the future doesn’t arrive with noise or spectacle. “The future is always beginning now,” she’s said — in the ordinary, unremarkable moments we tend to overlook. Aging, too, isn’t framed as decline, but as endurance: “the privilege of being alive.” Less reinvention, more attention. That’s the lesson worth carrying into the year ahead.
